long in the saddle...
As the llat racing season draws to a close, it is the sprinters who usually have the chance to make up for poor early season Iorm. In the wake of the Ladbroke Sprint Cup at Haydock some classy sprinters will be lining up at Ayr on 20 September for the six turlongs Gold Cup.
Last year’s winner ‘Final Shot’ will be there to defend the race which he won as a three-year-old. He’s had an average yearso tar, and will be Iuckyto ligure in the frame this time around. A better bet could be Green Dollarwho has been consistent all season and won what could be classed as a Gold Cup trial at York at the beginning of the month. The handicappers could punish him a little too much as a result at that win though and in a large field like the Gold Cup he’ll have difficulty repeating his success. It the bookies are feeling a little generous he should be a good saving bet each way.
Among the horses behind Green Dollar at York were Ayr contenders
Cumbrian Waltzer, Dry Point and Masnun (who ran disappointingly alter a recent victory at Goodwood). Cumbrian Waltzer has lost his early season Iorm which brought consistent results and a couple at victories and he now looks unlikely even to repeat his Iourth place at last year in The Gold Cup. .
Also outpaced by Green Dollar at York was Bertie Wooster. Now an eight-year-old (and therelore well past his best in sprint terms) Bertie has given his supporters another exciting season. Although he comes out at the stalls like a donkey and runs the Ilrst three turlongs like a tortoise, he has once again shown that he can outpace the youngsters over the linal lurlong it he gets a decent run. He’s also just about due Ior another victory, so watch Ior him to go one better than his second place at last year. (Philip Parr)
