Hughes' prolific career as maestro of teenage angst continues unabated in this latest comic outpouring on the traumas and trivialities of growing up. Candy's Buck initially appears to be an overweight. clumsy. tactless slob. the last person you'd ask to look after your kids. but here he gets the chance to look after three of his brother's kids for the weekend. A carefully plotted and well scripted moral fable living upto the standards expected from the director of The Breakfast Club. Edinburgh: Filmhouse. I The ValiantDnes (15) (King Hu. Simultaneously a piece of Ming Dynasty historiography and an innovative. fast-paced adventure story that reunites the writer/director and three of the stars from A Touch ()fZert. A team of peasants and intellectuals is assembled by a Chinese official to wage a war of strategy. not confrontation. with Sino-Japanese pirates. But the plot is really no more than an excuse for some stunning martial arts set pieces that are derived from the more abstract Peking Opera tradition. Glasgow: GFT. Richard Adam‘s best-seller is transformed into this pretty animation adventure that lacks most of the tension and unique viewpoint of the book. When their warren is threatened by man . a group of rabbits decide to find a new home many miles away. Remembered (unfortunately) for Art Garfunkel‘s Number One hit. ‘Bright Eyes‘. Central: MacRobert Arts Centre. I Willow (PG) (Ron Howard. US. 1988) Warwick Davis, Val Kilmer. Joanne Whalley, Jean Marsh. 126 mins. A mystery baby turns up in the land ofthe little Nelwyn people. and one of their number has to return it to the adult-sized land ofthe Daikini. but the kid turns out to be someone special. Would-be blockbusting fairtytale epic offers producer George Lucas an opportunity to refashion Star Wars in a setting straight from Tolkien.
