Revived from a 57-year snooze in deep space. Warrant Officer Weaver is cajoled into joining a marine rescue mission to the planet that is home forthe original alien beastie.L'nrelenting1y paced with a terrifically gutsy performance from Weaver. this nerve-shredding sequel not only matches its predecessor but cannily surpasses it. Distinctive Gallic thriller in which the unkempt Inspector Blount. desolated by his wife‘s departure. becomes involved with a mysterious and alluring girl wreaking revenge for the death ofher prostitute mother. Eschewing the flashier Stylistics of recent French policiers. Niermans creates an atmosphere of repressed violence and all-pe rvading corruption but retains a certain wry humour. and is admirably assisted by the red-rimmed peepers of M. Giraudeau. Glasgow: GFT. Chicago’s finest firefighting men receive the Hollywood treatment in the film that burned up the US box office charts. Baldwin and Russell‘s sibling rivalry plays against a backdrop of stunning fire effects and big screen action as the Fire Department and De Niro‘s arson investigator search for clues amongst the charred remains of several victims with links to the forthcoming civic elections. I Bathroom lntimacies ( 18) (Jaime Humberto Hermosillo. Mexico. 1989) Gabriela Roel. Alvaro Guerrero. Marta Navarro. Maria Rojo. 78 mins. A rather obnoxious middle-class Mexican family are viewed from their bathroom mirror. Whatever Hermosillo’s dubious motives for bringing sex. porn and suicide to the screen. there are clearly shades of Almodovar lurking in the wings. Glasgow: GFT.

A rare screening of 1 lollywood's first full 'l‘echnicolour feature. here as a newly restored print courtesy of the UCLA Film Archive. Pieced together from incomplete negatives and print fragments. the film tells of an ambitious young girl determined to make her way into Regency society. Based on a play which itselfwas based on Vanity Fair. its theatricality shows through despite the emphasison cinematography. Edinburgh: Filmhouse. I Benjamin‘s Woman ( 15) (Carlos Carrera. Mexico. 1991 ) Eduardo Lopez Rojas. Arcelia Ramirez. Malena Doria. Ann Bertha Espitt. 90 mins. In an intriguing twist to the beauty and the beast fairy tale. seventeen-year old Natividad is desired by the 50-year old village idiot. But when he kidnaps her. she is able to turn the situation to her advantage until a local boy comes to her ‘rescue‘. Glasgow: GFT.

Renoir‘s updatingof Zola‘s novel captures all of its naturalistic spirit. Jacques Lantier (Gabin) is a train driver who falls in love with the beautiful wife of his stationmaster. who has already killed her former lover. In its time. the most expensive British film ever — thanks. no doubt. toa producer who imported sand to Egypt in order to get the colour right. High on spectacle. but a bit heavy on the theatrical side. with its origins in George Bernard Shaw ‘s play on imperial romance up the Nile showing through too clearly. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.
I Captive oi the Desert (PG) (Raymond Depardon. France. 1990) Sandrine Bonnaire. Dobi Kore. Dobi Wachinke. Fadi Talia. 100 mitts. A youngFrcnch woman is captured by rebel soldiers in Chad in 1975 and. while not under threat from her captors. she is constantly battling against exhaustion. lonliness and despair. A remarkable central performance by Bonnaire gives heart to this true story. which director Depardon covered asa reporter. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.

Tornatore's vision ofhis movie-mad childhood is a wonderful love letter to the cinema itself. Told largely in flashback. it traces the young Salvatore's infatuation with his village cinema. and his growing friendship with its projectionist (played to perfection by Noiret). Essentially. it's Tornatorc‘s lament forthe joyous movie-going experience ofhis youth and a recognition of the price we pay for our maturity. 1990 Oscar winner for Best Foreign Film. G1asgow:GFT.
