and the realisation that these portraits and jewels hold lascinating secrets and stories.
It was the jewellers Hamilton and Inches who approached the gallery with the idea of tracing the history oi Scottish jewellery by charting its appearance in Scottish Portraiture. The curators began by selecting be-jewelled portraits and then a team tracked down either the exact gems or close matches. A remarkable coupling is to be found in the ostentatious 1612 portrait oi the Countess oi Eglinton. You can examine the actual Queen of Denmark jewelled case which is pinned to her bodice in the painting. it 1936 portrait ol Flora Drummond features her hunger strike medal and the Suffragette colours. This medal, like so many of the exhibits gives a living presence to the characters.
Take up a magnifying glass to study Mary Queen of Scot’s inventory of jewellery and the rings, pendants and necklace which she gifted lo
well curled in lockets or plaited in bracelets. An exquisite sentimental piece is the miniature of Charles 1 hidden in the bud of the ‘trembler jewel’ (a posy of flowers which totter on delicate stems). Mourning jewellery appears to be at its worst in a plastic-looking set of Victorian jet.
Highland ring brooches with attached superstitions sit alongside Celtic Revival copies, and the garish, shiny ‘Scotch Pebble' jewellery popularised by Queen Victoria.
The 20th century witnessed the usurping of portraiture by photography, and heirloom gems have gradually been replaced by individualistic ‘art
L jewellery'.
From ‘Jinglin’ Geordie's’ golden gewgaws to Muriel Gray’s ghastly diamante, this exhibition displays jewellery as part of the nation’s history - at the same time giving the lie to any notion of Scottish dowdiness. (Sarah Knox)
