§ FRIDAY 30 ; Glasgow
. I The Wild River Apples and The Colour
. Wheel King Tut‘s Wah Wah Hut. St
“ Vincent Street. 221 5279. 9pm. £4.
j Without a record company. but certainly not fanless. WRAstill command a strong home following for their folk and country-tinged AOR. Support from The Catherine Wheel ofold. nobly deferring to their Norwich namesakes and returning with a modified moniker.
I Poteen Crash. Cotton Club. Scott Street. 3320712. 10pm. £3 (£2 with any club flyer). Another return visit to the Cotton Club for Potecn — Crash goes ceilidh for at least part of the evening.
I Dynamic Traders. Glassford Street. 552 6246. 10pm. Free.
I Kingmaker and Thrill Margin Bay Hotel. Gourock. 0475 31244. 10pm. £3.50. Apart from a penchant for punchy guitar pop (try Power Of Dreams as a comparison ) and serpentine song titles. Hull's Kingmaker can boast the distinction ofbeing the only band to appear on Friday A! The Dome who escaped with their integrity intact. Local support from Thrill Margin — influenced by Fugazi. Firehose. Minutemen et al. which sounds no bad thing.
I David Icke Disciples Hunting Lodge. Glencairn Square. Kilmarnock. Well. it had to happen. really . . .turquoise shellsuits mandatory. All gigs that were scheduled for Magoo‘s this fortnight have been moved to The Hunting Lodge.

I Lowliie and Honey Beretta Basin Street. Haymarket Terrace. 337 1006. Having just released the most accessible. and probably best. LP of their career so far in San Anrorium. Lowlife may at last see their fortunes take a turn for the better. Their stock-in-trade is big sweeping songs. which sound as though they should be enshrouded in clouds of dry ice. Be sure to arrive in time for the hotly-tipped Honey Beretta.
I Vatican Shotgun Scare and Crane Subway.Thc Cowgate. Dark. mordant
i and barbed sounds from the long-running

i I Planet Pop and Static Basin Street.
Haymarket Terrace. 337 1006. While ex-Rezillo and Revillo Eugene‘s kitschy I pop style has its undeniable appeal. most
eyes tonight will be fixed on Glasgow‘s Static. who have now got record companies seriously interested in their floaty songs built on hypnotic fuzz guitar progressions — especially evident on one song they had the grace to title ‘Loopish‘. I Capone And The Bullets St James Oyster Bar. Calton Road. 557 2925. Excellent Glasgow-based ska/2-Tone-style band whose genuine passion for the music is reflected in their energetic sets.
I Bluetinger Platform One. Rutland Street. 225 2433. Free. Having notched up
more gigs than Manic Street Preachers
have stitches. Bluefinger now have a tape
out with songs from their set: some originals. but mainly ballads and rockers 1 from the 50s and 60s. includinga
word-perfect ‘La Bamba‘
I I The Mutiny Strings Negociants. Lothian Street. 225 6313. 9.30pm. Free. Judging
from comments overheard at a recent
I Basin Street gig. The Mutiny Strings are
getting a little ‘epic' for some oftheir
! original followers. That's what comesof
: playing on a Lowlife LP. perhaps. and in
the right venue. such tendencies should
. seem quite natural and effective. Whether
Negociants is the best place for their
bigger music remains to be seen. I Avalon Preservation Hall. Victoria . Street. 226 3816. £1 after 9pm. Second
night at this venue for the popular local folk-rockers.

I Andy Weatherall, Soul Family Sensation and Dove Tunnel. Mitchell Street. 204 1000. 11pm. £5. See Clubs preview for
Soul Family Sensation. Dove are the latest
development in the Slam empire and Andy Weatherall — well. he's got his finger in so many pics at the moment. he makes Slam look redundant.

I The Rednecks Richard‘s Basement. West Regent Street. 221 ()1 16. 9pm. Free. I Captain America Hunting Lodge. Glencairn Square. Kilmarnoek. Ex-Vaseline Eugene‘s new band are quite
the flavour of the month — often compared
with Teenage Fanclub. sometimes considered far superior. Bigthings lie in wait.
Edinburgh
r‘; I I Goodbye Mr Mackenzie Queen‘s Hall. South Clerk Street. 668 2019. Tickets for this have been slow in selling. mainly because the publicity was buried behind several layers of hardening Fringe posters before it was even dry. Even so. space to breathe inside will doubtless be at a premium as their popularity in Edinburgh can hardly have diminished. After a warm-up in Dingwall. the Mackenzies return to their native city as one of the few local rock bands to have managed to achieve and retain distinction and individuality. They put on a good show too. needless to sav.
. u “K I Boltthrower and Paradise Lost Moshpit. Venue. Calton Road. 557 3073. Two leading Brit-thrash bands on one bill. The highly impressive Boltthrower habitually play in the company of bands with names like Carcass. Pestilence and Autopsy. but their fascination with all things grim is more a boys“ thang than a genuine lust for murder and disfigurement. judging from their past collaboration with fantasy game manufacturers The Games Workshop. Phcw. .
I Rock'n'noll Karaoke Tron Tavern. Hunter Square. 220 1550. 3—7pm. The Hitsville Grease Guns will also be making an appearance. we‘re told.

I Flowered Up and saidilorence Tunnel. Mitchell Street. 204 1000. 10pm. £6.50 plus booking fee. Tickets from Just the Ticket. Virgin. Union Street. 2264679. The Tunnel should suit the burrow boys
downtothe ground. In the past they've
. managed what is probably the "NM
i effective cross-breeding of rock and dance l’ve witnessed. and for all the loutish attitude and grating vocals. they are incrediblyentertaining live. Arrive early to avoid being turned away in favour of
