TROY GAME
The popular conception of classical ballet has male dancers prancing around looking precious in fights. But in 1974, American choreographer Robert North created a piece which shatters such images. Troy Game, the mascot piece of the London Contemporary Dance company for sixteen years, is to be performed by Scottish Ballet as a part of theirtripte bill. Muscling in alongside George Ballanchine‘s Concerto Barocco and Verdi's Vespri, Troy Game is a spectacular showcase for the male dancer at his athletic best. Using seven male dancers, who are worked frantically to a Brazilian Batucada beat, Troy Games both inflates and dispels the myth of the supermale.
Julian Moss, one of North’s ‘asslstants’ who are bestowed with the powers to re-create the works of the big man worldwide, is behind the Scottish Ballet production. Moulding the dance to complement the characteristics of
the Scottish company, Moss's piece has all the splendid farce of the original. ‘First of all it implies and establishes how masculine the dancers are, and then it gradually turns on its head, where we are poking fun at men putting their chests out.’
Although reluctant to table Troy Game as the lead section in the triple bill, Moss stresses its explosive nature. ‘lt’s impossible not to fall in love with those infectious samba rhythms, and by its very nature, the dance is a show-stopper. Where the ' Concerto shows the strengths of the girls, Troy Games displays the strengths of the male dancers.’
Scottish Ballet’s triple bill unites classical with thoroughly contemporary ballet and should prove irresistable to a diverse audience. (Kathleen Morgan)
