SirWilliam Gillies (1898-1973) a retrospective exhibition at The Scottish Gallery and Bourne Fine Art until 18 Sept.
As Scottish art experts joust over a proposed National Gallery lor Scottish Art, this exhibition seems appropriately symptomatic of the sale appreciation and reappraisal of past Scottish art.
That said, Gillies is a local hero, and this re-evaluation of his work is a good introduction to this distinctive painter ol the Scottish Lowlands.
Gillies biography reads romantically; born, brought up and educated in Haddington he became a student at Edinburgh College at Art. After being called up tor service in the Great War, he graduated in 1922 and won a scholarship to study in Paris. He then taught artlortorty years, becoming Head of Painting and, finally, Principal at Edinburgh College of Art in 1960. A newly published biography by W. Gordon Smith colours in the eccentric artist behind the images, but the curators have tailed to provide a

broadsheet or exhibition scheme to assist the viewer.
Gillies is renowned tor his magical landscape paintings. In 1939 he moved to the Midlothian village 01 Temple and there he painted outdoors in all weathers recording the topography, tight. shapes and shadows. His early works bypassed drawing and the paper was vigorously covered with hog brush daubs, whereas in later watercolours, such as Lettertearn, there is greater restraint with pencil or pen work evident beneath the washes. Gillies used thick oilpaint to translate the undulating Border landscape into layers reminscent oi stratilications. In winter months he studied Still Lite groups, but greater verve is to be lound in the work he produced on sketching holidays to the Solway, Moray and East Neuk coasts, Loch Duich and Perthshire.
Gillies is heralded as this century’s greatest Scottish landscape painter, but i suspect much of his best work is not represented here. (Sarah Knox)
