FRIDAY 9 1

Glasgow '

I The Blessing. Worldwide and Tora Morris Crash. Cotton Club. Scott Street. 332 (1712. 9pm. £4. Groomed and streamlined for commercial action. The Blessing are the kind ofsoft rock band the music industry occasionally chooses to manufacture for its own satisfaction and consumption. Yet despite being plugged and played ad nauseam. the last single ‘Highway Five‘ failed even to graze the Top 40. and local crew Worldwide are probably in a stronger position tonight in terms of pulling power. I Leatherlace and Gobstopper King Tut‘s Wah Wah llut. St Vincent Street. 221 5279. 9pm. £3.50. In the past year Leatherface have supported Mega City Four and Snuff in Glasgow. Their sound lies somewhere between the two bands. taking the cheesy thrashpop of MC4 and the anarchy of Snuff. shaking it about a bit

and inserting a sharp quirky edge where the melodies are lacking. Gobstopper (formerly Tribe of Benn) are less subtle than Leatherface. and that‘s some achievement. IAriel lcon. Sub Club. SATU RDAY 10 Glasgow I Barity! Barlty and Supergroovalistic King

Tut‘s Wah Wah Hut. St Vincent Street. 221 5279. 9pm. £3.50. A neatly-bound dance package from Cumbernauld. showing two sides of the same coin. Barky! Barky‘s newer material shows a harder. even grungier edge than before- now i understand the point of all those gigs with Electric Daisies - while Supergroovalistic prefer to blend a 70s funk influence with their techno-orientated sound. I Elephant Noise Traders. Glassford Street. 552 6246. 10pm. Free. Hard-gigging Edinburgh indie crew. I Kith And Kin Chisholm‘s. Shuttle Street. 1 Paisley. 889 6867. lfit‘s summer. it must " be time for Kith And Kin to lend themselves to the bill ofevery festival or outdoor event going. I The Matter Babies and Custard Bones Basin Street. llaymarket Terrace. 337 1006. 9pm. £2. The Matter Babies precede the release of their second album‘s-worth of snotty buzzsaw (yep. it‘s that word) thrash attack with a gig at their spiritual home. Those expecting the same as their debut should note that the line-up has altered slightly since then.

I Lucid Lacuna llead.Ca1ton Studios. Calton Road. 556 7066. £2.50 (£2). The latest Edinburgh band to attract a buzz. by virtue of their ‘indefinable aura‘ and forays into the realm of left-field rock. Plus. any group who use double-necked guitars these days must merit investigation.

I Vatican Shotgun Scare Trader Vic‘s. Victoria Street. 225 6569. 9.30pm. Free. The return of live music to the site that. years ago. took the risk of giving The Proclaimers a residency. A greater contrast with the dark. forbidding. ‘indie‘ sounds of VSS is hard to imagine.

I Sam Harlot and Pure Blind Panic Venue. Calton Road. 557 3073. 9pm. £3 (£2). Musical ehameleons Sam llarlet can shift gear from a great big Kitchens Of Distinction sound to. . .well.Joan Armatrading in a folk club. and confuse me greatly. which must be a good thing. Pure Blind Panic are easier to get togrips with. and provide more straightforward enjoyment of the radgc bastards with fiddles and acoustic guitars variety.

I Red Hot And Blue Platform One. Rutland Street. 225 2433. 9pm. £1 . Hard-gigging rockabilly and rock‘n‘roll band.

I The Brothers Preservation Hall. Victoria Street. 226 3816. £1 after 9pm.

MONDAY 12 Glasgow

I Simple Minds SECC. Finnieston Quay. 248 3000. SOLD OUT. While many an SECC show recently has been identifiable by tracts ofempty seats and bands struggling against the size of the hall. surely the Minds can be relied upon to fill the venue with punters and with presence. Their ever-expansive rock/pop sound isn‘t my can oflager but. crm. 1 could be inthc minority on this one.

Kirkcaldy

I The Thieves Adam Smith Centre. Bennochy Road. 0592 260498. Farfrom being a wasted opportunity. The Thieves‘ cover version ofThc Beatles‘ ‘Rain‘ may turn out to be the shrcwdcst move they ever made. The initial pressing has sold out. they‘ve achieved airplay south ofthe border and a new 12in of ‘Rain' is outas well.

A rescheduled date for that most commercialist and rock-market friendly of American country stars. Tonight he goes back to basics on his tod and with just an acoustic guitar for company. Rasher things have been done.

I Big Audio Dynamite Tunnel. Mitchell Street. 204 1000. 10pm. £7 plus booking fee. Tickets from Just The Ticket. Virgin. Union Street. 226 4679. Mick Jones minus just about all of BAD mark one. who buggered off to form the groovy Screaming Target because their credibility and reputation as dance and sampling pioneers had gradually been eroded over the years. BAD were one of those bands (like Pop Will Eat itself and Gaye Bykers On Acid) who inexplicably became a bad joke after what seemed like ages oflavish praise. which is a major pity because as dance-orientated bands go. BAD can put on a convincing live show.

I The Honeychurch and Murmur KingTut‘s Wah Wah llut. St Vincent Street. 221 5279. 9pm. £2. The purpose ofthis ‘Where‘s Carol tonight. then'." gig is not actually to demonstrate that these bands have managed to sever their umbilical ties to Ms Laula. but to allow a certain

Mr Earle to pop up after his gig tocheck out Murmur whom he has expressed an interest in producing.

I The Beltanes RG‘s. Queen Street.221 2200. 10pm. Free.

Edinburgh

I The Jesse nae Sound System Venue.

; Calton Road. 557 3073. This would appear . to be the monarch of the glens doing his

Gary Clail bit. presiding over turntables. tapes and a mixing desk and nodoubt I adding some ofhis own inimitable vocals 5 over the top. More ofa club atmosphere than a straightforward gig. certainly. but with Jesse at the helm it‘s bound to be
