I Homuald and Juliette (Coline Serreau. France. 1989) Daniel Auteuil. Firmine Richard. 118 mins. Winning serio-comic love story in which hard-nosed business exec falls for his black cleaning lady Richard and as their affair breaks down both class and racial barriers. her shrewd insight into the absurdity ofcorporate power-broking helps him to discover a new set of more worthwhile values. Following on from her huge French hit 'l‘rois Hommes Er Un Couffin (successfully Americanised as Three Men AndA Baby) Serreau comes up with another insightful and funny examination of the way we live now. though it does bear a highly coincidental resemblance to the outline of Pretty Woman! Edinburgh: Filmhouse.

I Scenes From A Hall (15) (Paul Mazursky. US. 1990) Woody Allen, Bette Midler. Paul Mazursky. 88 mins. Successful professional couple Allen and Midler are out celebrating their sixteenth wedding anniversary in true American style - by shopping together. In a burst of honesty. Allen reveals that he‘s been unfaithful. at which point the proverbial undesirable substance hits the air conditioning vent. Though everything looks set for a delirious showdown between two leading exponents ofthe mouth-off. Mazursky‘s normally cunning

hand with script and direction (as seen in Enemies - A Love Story) misfires here . leaving little of interest to meet high expectations. Glasgow: GFT. I Silence Of The Lambs ( 18) (Jonathan Demme. US. 1991)Jodie Foster. Anthony Hopkins. Scott Glenn. 119 mins. Following a series of horrific serial murders. imprisoned psycho-killer Hopkins is released to help Foster and Glenn‘s FBI agents track down the culprit. Adapted from a novel by Thomas Manhunler Harris. Demme‘s film version is a subtle but scarey suspense shocker. with two excellent performances and great narrative drive. Glasgow: Cannon'i‘he Forge. Odeon. Edinburgh: ()deon. UCl. Strathclyde: UCl Clydebank. UCI East Kilbride. I The Spider's Stratagem (15) (Bernardo Bertolueci. Italy. 1971)) (iuilio Brogi. Alida Valli. Tino Scotti. Allen Midgett. 97 mins. Returning home to investigate the defacemcnt of his heroic father‘s memorial. Athos Magnani (Brogi) discovers a world of mysteries. omens and ambiguities. Bertolucci's version ofthe Borges” short story shows the director at the height of his powers. Glasgow: (iF'i‘. I Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 (PG) (Michael Pressman. US. 1991) Paige Turco. David Warner. Ernie Reyes Jr. 87 mins. A quick return for the original shell-suits. although with less plot and less violence than the original. The evil Shredder has decided to grow a couple of mutants ofhis own. and it seems thatonly our four adolescent amphibians can save the day with the odd pizza reference and a truly dire ‘Ninja Rap‘ (with the painfully embarrassing Vanilla Ice). Time to hang up those shells. dudes. Glasgow: Cannon The Forge. Odeon. Edinburgh: ()deon. UCl. Central: Cannon. Strathclyde: Odeon Ayr. Odeon Hamilton. UCl Clydebank. UCI East Kilbride. I Thelma 5 Louise (15) (Ridley Scott. US. 1991) Susan Sarandon. Geena Davis. Harvey Keitel. Michael Madsen. 129 mins. The buddy/road movie genresare turned on their heads as Sarandon and Davis grasp the steering wheel and head offleaving a trail of murder and mayhem in their wake. On one level. the film isthe critical catalyst that had the feminists cheering and put the stars on the coverof Time magazine; just as importantly. it‘san accessible piece of entertainment with excellent central performances. Glasgow: Cannon The Forge. Cannon Sauchiehall Street. Edinburgh: Cannon. Dominion. UCI. Strathclyde: UCl Clydebank. L'Cl East Kilbride. I We're No Angels ( 15) (Neil Jordan. 115. 1990) Robert De Niro. Sean Penn. Dcmi Moore. 107 mins. Peripatetic Irishman Jordan‘s first Hollywood feature is this David Mamet-scripted comedy with De Niro and Penn as convicts on the run.who seek sanctuary in a bordertown seminary. Although the frantic comic mugging from the two stars becomes a little wearing. the core of the film. which shows how these apparently bad men are despite themselves drawn towards good. retains a healthily mocking sense ofcynicism towards the priesthood and a concentration on matters of faith and religion that mark it out as a much more rewarding project than many commentators have given it credit for. Glasgow1GFT. IWhore(18) (Ken Russell. US. 1991) Theresa Russell. Benjamin Mouton. Antonio Fargas. Elizabeth Morehead. 81 mins. London cabbic David Hines‘ award-winning play Bondage is transferred to the States and given the less than subtle Rossell treatment. Despite its sordid subject matter an emotional document oflife on the game it never slips into the brown paper bag realmsof tacky exploitation. Well-intentioned and not as degrading as knee-jerk critics would
