; Sunil Gupta: Photographs at Theatre Workshop until 31 Aug.
Although modest in size, the retrospective of Sunil Gupta’s work at
Theatre Workshop will be a valuable opportunity tor people who missed out on the Exiles, Fabled Territories and
Ecstatic Antibodies series to acquaint
l themselves with the man. In preparing ' the show Gupta has taken images from
the various projects he has been involved with, there not being enough room to present a whole project in the space available. ‘I suppose you could say that the theme linking them is that they are all photographs ot men‘, says Gupta, whose Asian roots and homosexuality have so tar inlormed most ot his work. Exiles (1986/87) tocused on the impossibility at open homosexuality in India. Fabled Territories, a collection at photographs taken by British Asian photographers and An Economy at Signs, a touring exhibition ot work by six Indian photographers, were both curated by

tremendously successiul Ecstatic Antibodies: Resisting The AIDS Mythology. To a certain extent Gupta‘s earlier work was cathartic, a response to the problems oi displacement and at living in a society where positive
images at the Asian community are law. ‘I got something oft my chest with those projects and I ieel ireer now,’ says Gupta. ‘II I return to that theme
‘ again I would hope to do it in a more
sophisticated way.’
Gupta's immediate plans are to take up a teaching job he has been altered in Hull. He would also like to see photography no longer coniined to Britain’s photographers' galleries, but displayed in mainstream city art
