THE ROCKETEER

The Racketeer (PG) (Jae Johnston, US, 1991) Bill Campbell, Jennifer l Connelly, Timothy Dalton, Alan Arkin. 109 mins. Latest to join the likes of Superman, Batman, Dick Tracy et al in i the seemingly unending line of comic strip would-be blockbusters, The i Racketeer is indeed an adaptation of l the comic strip of the same name, one thatall too few folks actually seem to have heard of. You might think that this - removes a portion of the whale raison d'etre of the thing -we do after all go to Dick Tracy, for instance, to see how the film makers have found a celluloid equivalentol Chester Gould‘s original artwork- but in the case of The Racketeer, the sheer entertainment factor ultimately wins the day. Cleancut unknown Bill Campbell is

Cliff Secord, a plucky pilot helping engineer oldster Peevy (Arkin) in testing out a new plane design, when he unwittineg takes possession of a stolen experimental rocket pack and becomes the talk of 1939 Los Angeles as the mystery flying figure known only as ‘The Rocketeer‘. Initially hoping only to impress aspiring movie actress girlfriend Jenny Blake (a most fetching Jennifer Connelly), who seems rather more besotted with smoothie screen heart-thrab Neville Sinclair (Dalton), events take a dangerous curve when the matinee idol turns out to be atop Nazi ringleader. lt's notjustJenny who’s in danger now, farthe American way itself is under threat, and only ‘The Racketeer' stands between freedom in peril and the tyranny of the Swastika.

Sure, it's pretty dumb stuff, but that‘s as it should be, especially when the film makers have created a central narrative strong enough to bear the weight of bath the derring-do and the knowing laughter. Campbell is personable enough to avoid being wooden in the straight hero role, and Jennifer Connelly clothes her good girl characterisation in a satiny evening gown number that just yells ‘bad'. Messrs Dalton and Arkin too, are respectably hissable and chummy in all the right places. All in all, the best kids’ treat of the summer by far. (Trevor Johnston)
