The summer festival returns to Glasgow Green for a fortnight ofentertainment in and around the tented village at Nelson‘s Monument. with theatre. music. stalls. side-shows. children‘s events. circus workshops. fairground rides. and just about anything else you can think of. Last year's Glasgow Fair, seen by many as a highlight oi the City oi Culture celebrations, was a modern revival oi a much older event, a gathering on Glasgow Green oi side-shows, iairground rides, musicians, pedlars and travelling players which took place annually during the Fair iortnight until about 1870. The Fair makes a welcome return to the Green this month and, like last year, combines a consciousness oi tradition with the best in current entertainment.
Topping the bill this time around is the acclaimed Footsbarn theatre company, a travelling group oi actors who periorm under canvas around the world, making their Scottish debut at the Fair. The central venue ior other events will be a lavishly decorated travelling dance hall - velvet seating booths, rococo carvings and cherubs on every pillar— known as the ldolize, which will provide the setting iortea dances, cabaret, and a wide range of music-jazz, jive, folk, rock and cajun. :' Buxworth Steam Group add a historical I note to the tun with their Victorian ' steam-driven iairground rides, accompanied by a steam organ, and there will be iree entertainment each day in the Penny Geggie beer-tent— named aiter the traditional iairvenue

Kids are well catered lor with a tree Children’s Holiday Club each weekday morning, oiiering workshops irom circus skills to rap and hip-hop and a variety oi periormances. A tree creche is also provided lor very small children.
The Fair is organised by the East End initiative, a community company which runs a variety oi arts activities throughout the year, such as a recent project to build an imposing installation oi ‘dream machines‘ — sculptures created irom scrap cars which will be on show at the Fair, doubling as an unusual children’s playground. Another sculpture project will be going on during the iortnight, as artist Rob Mulholland enlists Fair-goers' help in building a giant ‘Green Man’ out oi old cans, which will then be recycled to raise money tor the Yorkhill Sick Kids Appeal. All told, there are more than 150 events taking place in and around the tented village which will house the Fair— let‘s just hope the sun shines. (Sue Wilson)
