I Carol Kidd and her Orchestra Theatre Royal. 8pm. £17.50. £15.£12.5(). £10. £8.50. £6. £4. Glasgow‘s favourite jazz singer is fast becominga fixture at the Jazz Festival. and is always guaranteed to get it offto a rousing start. As with her Christmas Concert Hall appearance. she will use what she calls her ‘Scottish trio‘ of Dave Newton. Ronnie Rae and John Rae. as well as Adrian Drover's rather pop-ish arrangements for the sugary Orchestra. A definite bonus isthe presence of special guest Martin Taylor on guitar.
I Bob Berg/Mike Stern Quartet Tramway. 7.30pm. £8 (£6). Guitarist Stern and saxman Berg play bright. melodic modern jazz with more than a hint of fusion influence. Both are alumni of the Miles Davis band ofthe 80s, but. like John Scofield. have gone on from that launching-pad to establish solid reputations as leaders in their own right. I Blues 'n' Trouble Late Night Club at Tramway. llpm. £5 (£3). Popular Edinburgh r'n‘b outfit.
I The Famous Grouse Riverboat Shuttle P.S. Waverley. Sails 7.30pm. £12. Always a popular

When he gets tired. the more Coltrane-influenced Mornington Locket can take over; the rest ofthe band features Dick Pearce on trumpet. John Critchinson on piano.
