plus booking fee. Tickets from Just The Ticket. Virgin. Union Street. 226 4679. See preview. The Mock Turtles were forced to pull out as support but The High and The Apples seek to make their mark with polar strategies The High gently lavishing the crowd with their entrancing pop and The Apples bludgeoning them with their chanty. funky pop.

I Bo Diddley City Hall. Candleriggs. 7pm. £1 1 . £9.50. Tickets from Ticket Centre. Candleriggs. 227 5511. Atrue star. one of the most durable figures in rock'n‘roll and the hippest guy ever to wear a sheriff‘s badge. That throbbing beat and those immortal chords cast an indelible

influence on all that came after. Swap your

Inspirals tickets for some of these while you've still got time!

I The Buzzcoclts Barrowland. Gallowgate. 552 4601. 7.30pm. £7 plus booking fee. Tickets from Just The Ticket. Virgin. Union Street. 226 4679. Get out the red carpets. eulogising heckles at the ready. The Buzzeocks may be pushing pension age but they‘re still capable ofachieving some mighty fine combinations of melody and noise (or at least reminding you they once were. with a back catalogue re-run lesser bands would kill for).

I Teenage Fanclub. The Groovy Little Numbers. Static. Hideous Thing and liaison D'etre Glasgow Polytechnic. Cowcaddens Road. 332 0681 . 9pm. £5 (advance). £6 (door). Students and guests. Glasgow Poly ‘s end-of-term bonanza. with carousing permitted until 7am. Those who missed out on T. EC. 's two shows at King Tut‘s had better catch the grungey ones now. as they’re waltzing straight past Glasgow on their July tour. Staticare three fragile-looking souls who unleash a mighty racket of a piece with many ‘post-Valentine‘ (cough) bands. which makes them a pretty fine proposition for

discerning indie kids. Hideous Thing and Raison D‘étre play acoustic sets in the downstairs bar.

I Marsha Fresca King Tut‘s Wah Wah Hut. St Vincent Street. 221 5279. 9pm. £4. Clean-living funk-driven rock band who‘ve succeeded in selling out two major Glasgow shows and have a cluster of defaced posters as their reward. Don’t drink. don‘t smoke. what do they do‘.’ Meditate before they go onstage apparently.

I Worldwide Crash. Cotton Club. Scott Street. 332 (1712. 10pm. £3. Following up their jolly folky acoustic support to Buddha Grass Harbour. Worldwide return to the Cotton Club for a bit ofthe real thing— jolly. electric rock and. hey. it's sort of folk-influenced too!

I The Funk Collective Glasgow School of Art. Renfrew Street. 332 9797. 9.30pm. £2.

I Lisa M and Connie Lush Tunnel. Mitchell Street. 204 1000. 11pm. £5. Personal appearances. Lisa M’s current soul dance single ‘People‘ is reputedly a bit ofa dancefloor ‘burner'. as they say in clubspeak.

I The Rhymes Traders. Glassford Street. 552 6246. 10pm. Free.

I The Kevin McDerrnott Orchestra Dugout. Cathcart Street. Greenock.0«175 27918. 10pm. £5. As well as supporting our Rod at Parkhead. the Kevin McDermott Orchestra also recently played the Grand 01‘ Opry again as a benefit for the Music In Scotland Trust. And to further prove what caring chaps they are. this current extensive Scottish tour takes them to the gig-deprived Highland regions too.

I The BMX Bandits and The Loveless Harbour Arts Centre. Harboursidc. Irvine. 0294 74059. Everyone's favourite juvenile gibberers mark the release of their new single 'Comc Clean‘ with some more hilarious live shenanigans. Aberdeen's The Loveless (APB in a previous life) return from their Stateside foray as support.

I The Thieves Stewarton Town Hall. Stewarton. Quite a low-key appearance. considering their newly-released single. a cover ofThe Beatles' ‘Rain‘. A fund-raiser. with money being split among various charities. Other locally-based bands appearing.

I Urban Dress Christie‘s. Main Street. Alexandria. 0389 57799. 9.30pm. Free.

Edinburgh

I Botany 5 and Zulu Syndicate Iidinburgh College of Art. Lauriston Place. 229 14-12. lllpm-—-lam. £5. Students and guestsonly. lind-of-term rave-up with two ofthe hippest names it's possble to drop at the moment. even if Botany 5 are signed to Virgin (and hay e a single. ’Nature Boy'. just released). The saga of Zulu Sy ndicate continues. Reports now suggest that Professor Griff's management learn feel that I‘lorida is just a bit too farawaon

I Sam Harlet and The Flat Stanley Moray House Student Union. Holyrood Road. 556 8455. £2. Sam Harlet have been building up their live following from the Basin Street scene with pretty constant gigging. SATURDAY 15 Glasgow

I The Humplt Family and Blue October Strathclyde University Union. John Street. 552 1895. 9pm. £3. Studentsand guests. Strathclyde University ends its session with two suitably infectious bands. The Ilumpff Family are already well loved for their mad cajun pastiche. maintaining that theirs is true dance music. Blue October play more pedestrian synth pop but their enthusiasm is catching.

I A Chocolate Morning and The Barllies KingTut‘s Wah Wah Hut. St Vincent Street. 221 5279. 9pm. £3.50. A Chocolate Morning like their indie music good and powerful. with a set that builds loan impressive crescendo. Their debut IiP. ll’asled. is out now on Glasgow‘s new Still label. The Barflies favour strummy indie pop. and with the demise of local glam rockers Barfly should no longer be subject to any embarrassing confusion.
