Mahmoody is as happy in her middle-class life as anyone with her dress sense ever could be. Hubby ‘Moody’ ls big, hairy and huggable, her daughter Mahtob is sugar-sweet and while the home may be small, It is choc-a-bioc with wonderful symbols of the consumer society. But trouble is in store, for Moody is Iranian, and he wants to take the iamin home to meet his folks.
From the moment Betty first meets her in-Iaws at Tehran airport, you know that there are going to be misunderstandings. Moody becomes increasingly distant and when he capitulates to his family‘s demands to embrace the Islamic state, Betty finds herself prisoner in an alien society where women are considered to be thelrhusband’s chattels. Betty and Mahtob seem destined fora life of indoctrination and servitude, unless the stereotypical American mom can
~ overcome her dependence on Moody,
accept the help of the one nice (if greasy) Iranian, thwart the dastardly

heathen and get home safely with her daughter.
Fairy-tale stuff for Sally Field, who stars as Betty—the story of one woman's struggle against adversity. Or it could have been. But this was made at a time when Iran was still the big bad wolf of the Middle East and is
straightforward xenophobia,
unsophisticated and parochial. Where the Mahmoody character could have grown through the film,

insignificant of insights to the Islamic culture is discarded in favour of the sort of detail designed to provoke ' prejudice. The Israeli locations, ironically substituting for Iran, are
' poorly shot. And while ‘certain events ; have been Iictionalised forthe purpose 3 of dramatic clarity’, the film has about

From that point on. there's no let-up until his bathtime demise as an overweight alcoholic. aged 27. Kilmcr‘s superb characterisation as Morrison dominates to such an extent that the other actors struggle to assert themselves even one-dimensionally. and little insight is given into what fired Morrison's self-destructive genius. Still. Stone's ‘tits 'n' acid' version ofThe Doors' history. while selective and highly inaccurate. is never boring. Glasgow: ()deon.

A very young-looking and Scots-sounding Connery works his charming (and — in hindsight — somewhat camp) way through the diabolical back passageways of Dr No's evil empire and the requisite number of floozies. pausing only to take out the occasional tarantula and take in the Caribbean scenery.
