I The Pearltishers and Riverhead Venue. Calton Road. 557 3073. With their debut EP (as The Pearlfishers) on the racks. and a recent Daily Record feature. Mark Goodier session and NB appearance behind them. the troubled ship that Davey Scott started out as Hearts And Mindsin 1986 may be on course for smoother waters now. I The Tex Fillet Five Negociants. Lothian Street. 225 6313. 9.30pm. Free.
I Live music Bistro. Pelican. Cowgate. 225 5413.
WEDNESDAY 12 Edinburgh
I The Naturals and Sparkwood Venue. Calton Road. 557 3073. Doors 9pm. £2.50 (£1 .50 with invite). A double showcase gig. as quite a bit of interest has grown around Sparkwood. fronted by Jenny DeVivo. who previously served time in Botany 5 and Slice. and The Naturals. The latter were described by one London record company scout as ‘the weirdest band I‘ve ever seen‘. which probably gives the wrong impression. Unlike most 605-influenced types around Edinburgh. .who tend to ape a garage band sound. The Naturals conjure up a sophisticated. swaying pop sound. with brass and epic sentiments. They‘ve even managed to convince Lenny from The Thanes to join and adopt the generic Naturals haircut.
I McEwans Lager Rhino Rave Network. West Tollcross. 228 3252. 8pm—late. £9 (£7 with student ID). The excellent Taxi Pata Pata. from Zaire. play in aid ofCare For The Rhino. whose population has declined by over 90 per cent in the last twenty years. To make up for the eyebrow-raising door charge. THURSDAY 13 Glasgow
I The Primevals Pier 39. Custom House Quay Gardens, Clyde Street. 221 0021. 9pm. Free. Glasgow‘s most resilient and pretty-brilliant-in-most-respects group. who still manage to avoid stagnation. Their fired blues and country-influenced rock has won them a lot of respect overthe years. and I‘ve yet to see a performance which is anything less than great.
I The Sea Urchins Rooftops. Sauchiehall Street. 332 5883. 10pm. £3 (advance). £4 (door). Tickets from 23rd Precinct. Bath Street. 332 4806. Missing Records. Oswald Street. 248 2495. and Lost In
Music, De Courcey's Arcade. Cresswell
Lane. 339 8155. Far too long. no hear. Of all the embarrassing twee bands of the mid-805. The Sea Urchins were without a doubt the wettest. But they were also the best. Rumour has it they‘ve toughened up since their Sarah heyday - maybe they sound like The High now. One not tobe missed by any self-respecting indie kid. I know I‘ll be there. stripey T-shirt and all. I Jacob's Ladder Halt Bar. Woodlands Road. 332 1210. 9.30pm. Free.
I Adam 812 Solid Rock Cafe. Hope Street, 221 1105. 10pm. Free. All-girl rock group.
I Clockwork Orange and The Ruby Suit Chisholm’s. Shuttle Street. Paisley. 889 6867. 10pm. £1.50. Clockwork Orange play energetic electro-pop. Tacky but catchy. The Ruby Suit are slicker and the emphasis is much more on good old~fashioned guitar pop.
