Camanachd, the ancient Gaelic sport of shinty, has a reputation for being a vigorously violent game. Vigorous it certainly is, with the best of the Highland teams elevating the game to a rip-roaring spectacle of skill and stamina, which has left no place for violence in the modern game.

Forthe uninitiated, it’s the proverbial game of two halves, twelve players a side, each using his caman (club) to knock a wee ball through the other side’s goal. Highlanders emigrating to Canada saw shinty evolve into ice-hockey, and lone players practising their set-pieces are said to have given rise to the sport we now know as golf.

This Saturday sees the final of the Bank of Scotland Glasgow Celtic Society cup, the game’s oldest competition, founded in 1879. Reigning champions Oban Camanachd will be looking to extend their run of wins to a record fifth year, while Glenorchy will be contesting their first final.

Should Glenorchy emerge triumphant, it will be only the second major trophy for the recently relormed club, which won the South league last year. Oban are generally thought to be

the form team, playing in three finals this year as well as taking the South League this season. However, clearing a recent fixture backlog meant playing two games a week for six weeks and caused several injuries to established players, weakening the side. Ominously, they needed extra time to dispose of Strachur in the semi-finals.

Oban might be feeling a bit of fatigue at the moment, but it is nothing compared to what the players in the earliest recorded game of shinty must have felt. This event took place in 1272 BC when the tribe of the goddess Danu invaded the reigning Irish tribe of Fir Bolg. Needing some time to prepare their weapons before joining battle, the Fir Bolg called for an armistice. To while away the time, the two sides played Camanachd, and according to one source ‘dealt many a blow on legs and arms, fill their bones were broken and bruised, and they tell outstretched on the turf and the match ended.’ (Thom Dibdln)
