When Mo (McDermott) takes a broken robot home as a present for his girlfriend Jill (Travis). he little suspects that it will rebuild itselffrom their electrical appliances and declare war on humanity. Stanley's debut is a massively over-the-top. plagiaristic fantasy of machine versus man. but no less enjoyable or imaginative for it. Mental metal madness. Edinburgh: Cameo.

Nick Lang (Fox) is a Hollywood star trying to roughen up his image. The answer? A tough cop movie. researched at the right hand of resentful New York policier John Moss (Woods). It's a classic set-up for a predictable action/buddy comedy drama. but brave self-parody from Fox and a characteristically hard-bitten performance from Woods create a stylish entertainment from unpromising elements. A curious mixture of romance in 16th century heather and car chases in present day New York. the film is an inelegant. often ludicrous. but enjoyably daffy adventure. Lambert seems more at home with the contemporary passages and only

MacLeod sets out to defend himself and all he stands for. Left to his own devices young Kevin (Culkin) has to deal with two bungling burglars (Pesci ‘ and Stern) who threaten to invade his peaceful haven. I The lelcle Thlel (PG) (Maurizio Nichetti. Italy, 1989) Maurizio Nichetti, Caterina Sylos Labini, Heidi Komarek, Claudio Fulva. 98 mins. Director Nichetti returns to movies after seven years in television to wreak revenge on the latter medium‘s awful glossiness. In a multi-layered satire, Nichetti plays both himself — appearing on television to present his new art movie The Icicle Thief — and Antonio, the main character within the film. A ‘typical‘ Italian family watch the film at home. switching channels and making 'phone calls, and every few minutes the elegant monochrome is interrupted by crass, full-colour commercials, while the director despairs. Intelligent and very entertaining. Glasgow: GFT.
I In a Lonely Place (PG) (Nicholas Ray. US, 1950) Humphrey Bogart, Gloria Grahame, Martha Stewart. 91 mins. Bogart is on peak form as the self-destructive Hollywood hack suspected of murder in this tart and cynical mystery. Grahame is an appropriate foil as the woman in the opposite bungalow who offers a shoulder to cry on. Glasgow: GET.
I Jaws (PG) (Steven Spielberg, US. 1975) Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw, Richard Dreyfuss. 125 mins. Cracking shark adventure from the days when Spielberg movies were scary. See the citizens of Amity scream! Watch the bodycount pile up! Hear the authorities declare the water perfectly safe! Call me Ishmael. Central: Cannon.
I Jesus Christ Superstar (PG) (Norman Jewison, US, 1973) Ted Neeley. Carl Anderson, Yvonne Elliman, Narry Dennen. 107 mins. Set in modern Israel, complete with sand, sweat and tanks. Jewison’s oddly reverential screen version of the early Rice/Lloyd Webber musical has its moments, but is much too kitsch to be taken so seriously these days. Edinburgh: Cameo.

America‘s favourite family of the future (it says here), as animated by the celebrated duo. move to a new home in outer space when George Jetson gets promotion at Spacely Sprockets. His new job is jeopardised by a 3 sabotage campaign, however. which leads 3 to a struggle between the astral green I movement and the technocrats from the stratosphere. Strathclyde: Odeon Ayr. I The Kill-0H (18) (Maggie Greenwald. US. 1989) Loretta Gross. Jackson Sims. Steve Monroe. 92 mins. Maggie Greenwald‘s second feature stays relatively faithful to Jim Thompson's typically downbeat novel. In a dying beach resort, life is made hell by the bed-ridden demon Luane Devore. whose control over people’s lives turns her into a telephone torturer. Influenced by Scorsese and the Coen Brothers’ Blood Simple, the film‘s unconventional storytelling is emphasised by stark photography and makes for hypnotic viewing. Edinburgh: Cameo.
I Klndemarten Cop (12) (Ivan Reitman, US, 1990) Arnold Schwarzenegger, Penelope Ann Miller, Pamela Reed, Richard Tyson. 111 mins. The large fellow is the polis in question, taking up the reins in a nursery class when he goes undercover to track down the wife and child of a murder suspect. This is a sleazy, exploitative mishmash of genre-blending, family comedy spliced clumsily with bloodthirsty thriller, and a spot of child abuse thrown in for cheap pathos and a
