IPICK’OF THE LITTEB

Gorillas in The Mist, showing during the Environmental Film Festival

It's that green lime ofyear again; once more we are being encouraged to think globally and act locally. The aim of National Environment Week, 11-19 May, is to highlightthe issues and provide a catalyst for action, and while ‘greenyshoes’ may have losttheir novelty value, the level of public interest remains high. Last year nearly 20,000 Scots took part in Environment Week and the organisers, the Civic Trust, expect to beat that total this time around.

As always there is a strong emphasis on practical conservation in the local environment, with schools, community groups and individuals organising litter«picking, riverclean-ups and recycling projects. In Edinburgh, the District Council are launching their Festival of the Environment, with around 40 exhibitions as well as talks, videos and competitions each day in the Environment Marquee in Princes Street Gardens. Elsewhere, Friends of the Earth and other groups are organising local events. If you want to get involved yourself, the organisers have produced a free booklet with

advice and suggestions for action (see Listings for details on this and other contacts).

Environment Week will also see the the launch of Green Scheme, 3 community arts initiative set up by Craigmillar Festival Society in Edinburgh. Working with local schoolchildren, they have produced a tape/slide show entitled ‘Cows and Horses Sometimes Jump 0verthe Fence into Craigmillar' which will be on show at the Environment Marquee, as will the ‘Portarhythm’ a percussion sculpture made out of scrap materials at Craigmillar Arts Centre. Green Scheme, together with the Edinburgh Wildlife Group, will also be opening their new neighbourhood nature reserve at Hawkhill Wood.

Also taking place is Scotland‘s first environmental film festival, running at the Edinburgh Filmhouse throughout the week. While environment- triendliness isn’t one of Hollywood’s more striking characteristics, a surprising number of films in recent years have contained a green message of some kind. Robert Redford’s The Milagro Beanfield War tells the story of a Mexican community’s struggle against encroaching developers, Star Trek IV contains a twenty-minute save-the-whales plug and Meryl Streep takes on the nuclear industry in Silkwood, to name a few examples. Television documentaries and animation (including the Oscar~winning Creature Comforts) also feature in the programme, illustrating the wide variety of ways in which

= filmmakers are addressing I environmental issues, and proving that

film buffs can be friends of the earth as well. (Sue Wilson)
