WOMEN AND MYTHOLOGY
(re)Current Allegories by Jane Brettle
Jane Brettle: (re)Current Allegories, Street Level, Glasgow.
Greek mythology and philosophy permeate the European culture at our daily lives in ways which are, tor the most part, unaniculated and unexplored. They have entered our collective subconscious. That is why the excavation of that mythology can be so fascinating and fruitful, tull of resonance, and at the same time provide pointers tor the changes we might want to make within our current culture and politics. Jane Brettle's exhibition, cleverly titled (re)Current Allegories, is an investigation of this, and particularly of the position occupied by women in these mythologies.
Brettle has done this by photographing in Greece and elsewhere visible tragments of ancient Greece and ways in which they

resonate in today’s world. Greek tamin snapshots, monumental sculpture, a beauty queen, plaster casts of Greek sculpture — all concentrating on women/goddess images - intermingle
, with ruins and archeological
investigation. Use ot black and white as well as colour, the photgraphing ot collages ot banknotes, postcards and other tourist mementoes, the use ot single-image, almost documentary recording: all this makes for a visually interesting exhibition.
Yet I was left oddly dissatisfied. The work somehow doesn’t go as far as it could; it doesn't push its qualities. The lyricism is not sufficiently poignant; the politics are shrouded rather than radical; the aesthetics are not disruptive enough. It teels like a starting point, and one with plenty of potential. One image, a colour photo taken in a formal garden, particularly caught my eye. In the foreground is the
l head and shoulder of a stone
neo-goddess; in the distance, slightly out of focus, is a woman crouching,
5 taking a photo. Both are looking in the
same direction. This one image encapsulated the whole project tor me, while leaving it open tor further speculation. (Hilary Robinson)
