V MUSICAL CHECK MATE
‘I get all the men,’ boasts Chess star Rebecca Storm. ‘I have to leave one and tall in love with another in the space of about six minutes.’
The current touring production ol the Tim Rice/Abba musical about grandmasters with grand ambitions, was stripped-down then spruced-up by replacing the original’s technological wizardry, computer screens and TV banks, with the more theatrically appropriate dancing chess pieces.
‘The theme is lnterestlng,’ says Storm, '
'because you can have dancers representing chess pieces. It you were doing it about snooker or tennis you'd be in trouble.’
Featuring I Know Him So Well, and a song written speclally lor Storm when she joined the show a year ago, the
soundtrack bears many ol the hallmarks ol the Swedish supergroup, but also extends its musical horizons to incorporate other styles. ‘A lot of the chords and harmonies you can hear In that Abba style,’ says Storm, ‘but there are also some that are bordering on the classical and there's rock ‘n’ roll and
tour beautiful ballads. It’s so varied
that you couldn’t say it was this or that
