LISTINGS WEEK ONE FILM
old-style filmmaker/adventurer at play. sleeves rolled up in a Hemmingwayesque struggle against the oncoming barrage of experience. As actor. however. Clint turns in what's arguably his best performance. Edinburgh: Filmhouse. I White Palace (18) (Luis Mandoki, US. 1990) Susan Sarandon. James Spader, Kathy Bates, Jason Alexander. 102 mins. Modern comedy-romance based around a i St Louis diner. where yuppie Spader (familiar but successful casting) meets older fast-food waitress Sarandon. An ] unlikely. cross-class affair ensues, which allows Mandoki not only to indulge in a predictable but stickily enjoyable love story. but also provides the backdrop for an observant. highly amusing satire on the ; largely ignored US class system. Glasgow: Cannon The Forge. Cannon Sauchiehall Street. Edinburgh: Cannon. UCI. Strathclyde: UCI East Kilbride. I Who Framed Roger Rabbit? (PG) (Robert Zemeckis. US. 1988) Bob Hoskins. Joanna Cassidy. Christopher Lloyd. 92 mins. In 1949 LA, the humans live alongside the Toons. cartoon characters working in movies. Animated star Roger Rabbit hires private dick Hoskins to keep tabs on his wife. but he uncovers a conspiracy that threatens the future of Toontown itself. An amazing technical achievement for the interaction of cartoons and live action. this box office winner spoofs thefilm noir genre while milking the Tex Avery-style cartoon violence for all it‘s worth. Glasgow: GET. I The Why7s Man (PG) (Murray Grigor. UK. 1990) George Wyllie. Bill Paterson. 55 mins. A comedy-documentary written by Grigor and Wyllie and originally shown on Channel 4. which investigatesthe Glaswegian scu|?tor and humorist’s work and the theme of art‘s connections with politics. as illustrated by Wyllie‘s straw locomotive and paper boat. Glasgow: GET. I The Wizard 01 Oz (PG) (Victor Fleming. US. 1939) Judy Garland. Frank Morgan, Ray Bolger. Bert Lahr. Jack Haley. Margaret Hamilton. Toto. 102 mins. Miserable Dorothy runs away from home but is soon whisked up into a magical land where her adventures teach her that happiness is to be found in her own back yard. Classic stuff indeed. just chockful of great songs. characterisation and I memorably garish design. Perhaps marginally less enjoyable forthe curmudgeonly element rooting for the Wicked Witch Of The West though.
I Women On The Verge or A Nervous Breakdown (15) (Pedro Almodovar. Spain. 1988) Carmen Maura. Antonio Banderas, ’ Julieta Serrano. 98 mins. When Pepa‘s illicit affair with an older man is abruptly ' terminated, she sets out for revenge, but is i distracted by a succession of offbeat
visitors seeking her calming influence. A splendidly bizarre character comedy from ' the maker of Law Of Desire, with some off-the-wall acting and a plot that pays ironic but affectionate homage tothe classic Hollywood comedies of the 1950s. Glasgow: GET. Strathclyde: UCI Clydebank.
I Zandalee(18) (Sam Pillsbury, US. 1990) Nicolas Cage, Judge Reinhold. Erika Anderson. Viveca Lindfors. Aaron Neville. 104 mins. Complex tangles of love and lust begin to develop when uneasily married couple Thierry (Reinhold) and Zan (Anderson) receive a visit from sleazy, hedonistic artist Johnny (Cage), after which a passionate affair develops between Zan and Johnny, with both comic and tragic consequences. An attempt at the overworked theme of erotica versus pornography which, despite j the charisma of the performers. proves to be a pretty flimsy excuse for a glossy bonk-frenzy. Glasgow: Cannon Sauchiehall Street. Edinburgh: Cannon, UCI. Strathclyde: UCI Clydebank. UCI East Kilbride.
