Stanley Spencer: The Apotheosis bf Love Fri 19 Apr—16Jun. A centenary tribute to Stanley Spencer ( 1891—1959), this isthe first exhibition to realise Spencer's ‘Church llouse' project in which he hoped to fuse religion and worldliness. Some of his most striking works depict the Resurrection against a Glaswegian backdrop.

2 consists of prints, watercolours and
wall bronzes cast from reliefs. The
imagery is consistent throughout. Stick-like figures- alone, or in a crowd —float in an empty space, often blue. They cast no shadows and inevitably
é one compares them to Giacometti's
: works. But his individualisation of gait and silhouette is entirely absent here;
these are, to all intents and purposes, simply watery figures ofthought.
The exhibition catalogue discusses Taylor’s work in terms of risk-taking.
j There are two ways to consider this: through the history of an artist’s
development or in terms ofthe works themselves. Risk and creativity are two
I sides of the same coin. Taylor is skilled
and respected for his contribution to
Scottish art over the years. Much admired, at one time, for his abstract prints and watercolours, he has refused to rest on his laurels and continues to experiment with form, content and media.
Depicting the human tlgure is possibly the most difficult challenge for an artist, altering, as it does, unlimited opportunities for bathos and cliche. But here, spindly figures remain spindly figures, lost in large sheets of paper. Only the half-tone screen prints “The Funeral’ and ‘The Group’ begln to have any real sense of presence. In every case, one feels that a picture is stopped just at the point where the real work and the playing with, or combining of, materials could start.(Fiona Byrne-Sutton)
