MUSIC ROCK & BLUES

I Live Music Venue. Sauchiehall Street. 332 3872.

Edinburgh

I Sonic Boom Venue. Calton Road. 557 3073. A.K.A. Pete Kember. one ofthe two driving forces behind Spacemen 3 (it‘s said that ifyou lived in Rugby in the mid-80$. you were either in Spacemen 3or you beat them up). brings his hypnotic trance pop to the Venue and no doubt a number of oddly shaped vintage Vox guitars as well.

I Four ldle Hands Negociants. Lothian Street, 225 6313. 9.30pm. Free.

I Live music Pelican. Cowgate. 225 5413. Free.

. Glasgow

I Blur and Catherine Wheel King Tut's Wah Wah Hut. St Vincent Street.221 5279. 9pm. £4.50. See preview for Blur. This is not a speedy return for the Glasgow group Catherine Wheel. but that bunch of usurpers from glamorous Norwich. As it happens. every scrap of praise they received for their ‘She‘s My Friend‘/‘Upside Down‘ single was wholly deserved it‘s a substantial slab ofswirling epic guitars with a rumbling rhythm undercarriage.

I The Light Rooftops. Sauchiehall Street. 332 5883. £3. Tickets from 23rd Precinct. Echo and Virgin. The Light could easily have become ‘just another Scottish group‘. but a clutch of strong poptunes and a variety of diverse arrangements make them that bit more deserving ofyour attention. Plans for an album are afoot.

THURSDAY 2 Glasgow

I Chartbusters USA Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. Sauchiehall Street.332 3123. 6.30pm. £1 1.50. £10.50. £9.50. Sister Sledge and Odyssey strut their funky stuff under the dubious 'Chartbusters U.S.A.‘ banner. and. as both groups produced some of the best soul-pop of the 80s. this should be the destination for any self-respecting disco kid tonight.

I Manic Street Preachers King Tut‘s Wah Wah Hut. St Vincent Street. 221 5279. 9pm. £4. Having seen Manic Street Preachers live. you wonder why every other band doesn‘t just give in gracefully. Their raw punky approach may not produce the most diverse of sounds. but coupled with sheer energy. charisma and attitude. it makes for one of the most explosive live shows I‘ve ever seen. Truly a band to worship or abhor. Believe the hype with a vengeance.

I The Television Personalities Rooftops.

Sauchiehall Street. 332 5883. Dan Treacy

l and friends dispense some mild lunacy

E with their busy tunes. Like Green On Red. they‘ve been a name to bandy around rather than a group to go and see for too long. It‘s unlikely they‘ll ever hoist themselves beyond cult status. but their staying power and continued enthusiasm are to be admired.
