FRIDAY 19 Glasgow
I The Silencers Barrowland. (iallowgatc. 5524601. 7.30pm. S()l.l) ()L'T. Bigin Scotland and France. spurned by the Iinglish — The Silencers' large-sounding. Confident pop rock is good of its type and well executed. suggesting that they'll succeed in keeping at least a baby step ahead of the pack ofsoundalikes.
I Shack and The Candyskins King Tut's Wah Wah Itut. St Vincent Street. 221 527‘). 9pm. £4. Like Kitchensof Distinction and The Mock Turtles. Liverpool's Shack w rite understated pop gems and provide an unassuming stage presence. allowing the power oftheir Bcatlesquc melodies to carry them through their gigs rather than any false posturing. As a result. they're nev er less than brilliant.
I The Sound 01 The Blues Brothers ( ilasgoys University l'nion. L'niversity Avenue. 3398697. 9.30pm. £3.50. Studentsand guests. Time to don the trilbies and the shades for what has become a highly marketable venture. The populariton The Blues Brothers film has spawned many Belushi Aykroyd imitators. and it sounds like tonight will involve some similar ritual massacring of many a great Motown song.
I The Ancestry Rooftops. Sauchichall Street. 332 5883. 11pm. £2.50. Three humans and a drum machine pretentioust known as The Ancestor who. along with bands like Rosetta Stone. are endeavouring to move away from the doom and despondency image ofgothic music by using clcctro backing. But then. The Sisters of Mercy tried that ten years ago and look at them today.
I Peach County ( ilasgow School Of Art. Renfrew Street. 332 9797. 9.30pm. £3 (£2). New country in the l.y1c I.ovett vein. I Blyth Power l lalt Bar. Woodlands Road. 332 1210. 9.30pm. Free.
I Bo'Weevil Blackfriars. Bell Street. 552 5924. 9.30pm. Free. Rhythm and blues. I One World (’hristic's. Main Street. Alexandria. 038‘) 5779‘). 9.30pm. Free. (‘onfident and competent Scottish pop'rock.
Edinburgh
I The Boo Radleys Venue. (‘alton Road. 557 3073. Rightly at the forefront ofthe Liverpool indie scene. the Ichabod and] mini-LP saw them display sub-Sub Pop leanings but. like Swervedriver. they maintain a distinctly British character. ()n the current livery Heaven F.P they keep the strong melodies but instead of
shrouding them in grungey guitars. they
' indulge in the current infatuation for Banshee-esque swirly effects. And unlike the similar-sounding (‘hapterhouse and
Slowdive. they succeed in projecting some
sort ofstage presence when they play live.
I The Lost Soul Band and Savana Lamar
('alton Studios. (‘alton Road. 5567066.
10pm. £5 (£3.50). A (ircenpeacc benefit.
which is enough of a good reason forgoing
along. even if two promising (very
promising in The Lost Soul Band's case)
local bands weren't playing. (‘omparcd many times over with The Waterboys and The Ilothouse Flowers. the band have
songs stored tip which surpass their sole
single to date. ‘(‘offee And 1 lope’.
Anglo-Spanish group Savana Lamar have
been playing in Edinburgh under various
guises for quite a while now. and anyone
who lists both Paul Weller and [)urutti (‘olumn among their influences must be on to something pretty unusual.
I The Elevators Preservation Ilall. Victoria Street. 226 3816. £1 after 9pm. 1
