Fifty years ago, Worzel Gummidge, the first Puffin story book was published - son of Penguin, nephew of Peregrine and Pelican, kin to an aviary of p-p-p-p-p-publications. In 1941, good cheap children’s books were a contradiction in terms. If it wasn’t in hardback, said parents, teachers and librarians, itwasn'tworth tuppence, which was what that first Puffin cost— more or less. Even though Penguins were widely accepted and popular with the duftle coat brigade, the thought that the only books worth reading by children were in hardback lingered long after adults had adopted the flimsy
paperback.
That there are paperbacks for children is down to the dedication of legendary children‘s book editors like Eleanor Graham and Kaye Webb, who could sniff out the difference between Blyton’s Famous Five and Ransome's heroes holidaying in the Lake District. It's no exaggeration to say that from the time you can read -or be read to— until you are old enough to imbibe The Catcher in the Rye, the Puffin imprint does more for the sales of batteries than any advertising campaign ever could.
Ten top selling Puffins have been republished to coincide with the 50th anniversary, some of which have never —and nbver ought to be—out of print. Personal favourites include Mary Norton’s The Borrowers, Ian Serraillier’s The Silver Sword, and E.B. White’s rustic weepv, Charlotte's Web, about a spiderwho rescues a pig from pork. Among the many events scheduled to commemorate this happy birthday, one worth noting in your diary is in August at the Edinburgh Book Festival when a giant Puffin cake sculpture by children's book illustrator, Jan Pienkowski, will be on show.
