once of the very best singers on the British improvised music scene.

SATURDAY 6 Edinburgh

I Johnny Mathis Playhouse Theatre. Greenside Place. 557 2590. 7.30pm. £20—£15. The singer made his bundle from often cloyingly romantic ballads. but his early career thrived in the jazz clubs ofSan Francisco. including the famous Black Hawk. His new album. Mathis Sings Ellington. makes a return to these roots. and with luck there will be a fair amount of that side of his work included in the two shows he plays in this venue.

SUNDAY 7 Glasgow

I Kenny Davern Society of Musicians. 73 Berkeley Street. 221 61 12. £6(members £4). Clarinettist Kenny Davern is no stranger to these parts. or to this venue.. but his return visits are always welcome. Born in Long island. Davern began playing clarinet and saxophone under the influence of Benny Goodman and Pee Wee Russell. His first professional job was in a band led by trombonist Jack Teagarden. but his most famous association lay in the group he co-led with Bob Wilbur. Soprano Summit. As the name suggests. this was a saxophone outfit. but when the band broke upin 1976. Davern choose to concentrate on clarinet. He has evolved a highly individual. slightly off-the-wall style over the years. and has remained commendably open to influences from all areas ofjazz. Davern will be featured with the Society’s resident accompanists. the Sandy Taylor Trio.
