ART & EXHIBITIONS
I otter50artlsts. journalists and gallery curators have signed an open letter to the Scottish Arts Council deploring the state of the visual arts in Scotland. In the letter the signatories declared that ‘we believe that there is an unprecedented crisis in the visual arts. In fact. we are of the opinion that the SAC‘s actions have precipitated the closures ofthese galleries [the Fruitmarket and the 369] and that the inconsistency ofthc SAC‘s policies threatens the future stability of many other visual arts organisations.‘ The letter went on to demand that the SAC attend a public debate to discuss the future of Scottish arts. In Edinburgh. a number of people took part in a demonstration on 28 Feb to protest at the closures. I Edinburgh's parks are to befitth out with musical sculptures in April. The sculptures. which will ‘sing out‘ when stimulated by touch or wind and rain. are made from aluminium. steel. plastic and wood. Initially. the sculptures will stay in place for six months but. if they prove to be successful they may become a permanent feature. which means that. judging from the wind and rain we get here. Edinburgh folk are in for a fair old din.
