Rachaka defy easy categorisation. but can make imaginative use of improvisation and jazz-derived elements in their music. The Collective are now firmly established on the Scottish jazz scene. and have made favourable inroads down south with their progressive and exciting post-bop explorations. See preview.

The saxophonist‘s Scottish Jazz Network tour. which we covered in last issue's preview section. continues in the RSNO‘s converted church. It is by no means an idealjazz venue. but in a city where venues remain the major headache to promotors. it is far from the worst alternative. On past form. Ballamy's bright and varied modern jazz should rise above any limitations. Django Bates on keyboards and tenor horn. Steve Watts on bass. and drummer Martin France complete the line-up. emerged as one of the most consistently impressive of the younger jazz musicians who have elected to play in a mainstream style. His melodic and harmonic sense is unfailingly right. and while his guitar technique is excellent. it is never allowed to manifest itself as merely flashy. Alden will be accompanied by the Sandy Taylor Trio. now without the familiar figure of the late Alex Moore. whose sudden death made for a sad start to the year in Scottish jazz circles. The afternoon session features the Tim Barella Big Band at 2.30pm. £1 .
