A spirited documentary on the persecution faced by black American homosexuals. which includes footage of rap music. queer-bashing victims. protest marches and vogue dancing. Showing with 'Billy Turner's Secret a 25~minute study ofNew York‘s NWA culture. characterised by the ‘yo man. kiss my attitude‘ stance. Fifth Lesbian And Gay Film Festival On Tour. Ryan (Sally) and Reincr on top form. with highly entertaining results. Nora Ephron's witty screenplay intelligently ponders the possibility of male/female friendship with or without romance. and guess which side wins. . .Annie Hallforthe late 1980s.with now-famous faked orgasm. Lynch‘s much-hyped Cannes prize-winner turns out to be weird and wondrous in its own way. if not quite as cohesive as the earlier Blue Velvet. Cage and Dern are the energetic young lovers on the run. pursued by ultrastrange hitman Dafoe on a sometimes comic. sometimes disturbing. trail towards the ultimate rendezvous with Elvis and the Wizard ofOz. Aside from lovingly detailing the pernicious influence of pop kitsch upon our very consciousness however. the movie isn‘t really about anything. even if it is a helluva trip. Edinburgh: Cameo. Nine year—old Luke is warned by his Norwegian granny about the everpresent threat posed by the existence of witches. which isn't much help actually because within the next half hour he stumbles on their annual convention in a small English hotel and gets himself changed into a mouse for his pains. A pleasing adaption of Roald Dahl‘s children's story has director Roeg (in unusually straightforward manner) creating a superior kids movie that has you rooting for the mice all the way. Lots of fun. Edinburgh: Filmhouse. I Working Girl (15) (Mike Nichols. US. 1988) Melanie Griffith. Harrison Ford. Sigourney Weaver. Joan Cusack. 114 mins. Bitchy boss Weaver teaches her secretary (Griffith) the art of self-confidence so well that when she gets laid up the working girl takes her place. tackles the financial world head-on and romances Ford into the bargain. Supremely entertaining escapist fluffthat takes the old Frank Capra routine and gives it a contemporary sheen. The cast has a field day. natably Ms Griffith. who gets away with lines like ‘l‘ve got a head for business and a bod for sin‘. Glasgow: GF'I‘. I Young Frankenstein (15) (Mel Brooks.
