5—1 1pm; restaurant, noon—2.30pm and 8.30—1 1pm. The bar menu changes every week but typical offerings include salmon mousse, vegetable stir fry and orange and pineapple cocktail. Nothing is over £210. The restaurant menu is eclectic, featuring international favourites such as tagliatelle primo (green vegetables with a cream and gruyere sauce), ‘Parisienne’ salad (charcuterie. salad and bread), beef teriyaki (oriental marinated beefon a bed of noodles) and a selection of burgers. Most dishes are around £6, and the price includes french fries or baked potatoes and salad or vegetables.

lunchtime (1.15pm) not many ofthe menu’s enticing suggestions were left. It was a shame because other people’s hot meals — pasta in a creamy sauce with salad, Chinese-style spare ribs and rice — looked excellent, whereas my chicken and almond mousse was more ordinary. On the other hand, the fennel soup was delicious, as were the various pieces of home baking we sampled. Huge mugs of coffee were unusually good and reasonably priced at 55p.
l Fruitmarket Cate Bistro, Market Street, 225 2383. Mon-Sat 10am—S.30pm; Sun noon—5pm (fully licensed). The proprietors of what looks like the only vibrant corner of Market Street left, are valiantly struggling to keep their attractive cafe busy as their host Gallery and the City Art Gallery opposite close around them. The menu is determined by the markets, but the emphasis is on light meals — filled croissants, soup, mixed charcuterie platter - with imaginative splashes such as casserole of pheasant, bacon and redcurrants. There is always a good selection for vegetarians. Dishes are £3—£5. To make a point, they are currently exhibiting oils by Suzanne Kirk on their whitewashed
walls.
