Fridays

I Crash at the Cotton Club. 1 1pm—late. £4 (£3 with ticket, £2 before midnight). Unpretentious (apart from some of the punters), long-running and well-respected indie crossover/dance/groove night with a loyal crowd.

I Earth 375 Sauchichail Street. 11pm—3am. £3 (£1 .50 student). Rare groove, soul and bass dance night building up quite a following. Watch out for drinks promos.

I Home at TheChoice. l 1pm—3.30am. £3 (£4 without ticket). New night at The Choice which, despite the J amesian name, is playing upfront house and mellow garage wait a minute, mellow garage?

I Icon at the Sub Club. 11pm—3.30am. £3.50. Replacingtheirlong-running and highly successful Joy, icon is the brave new hope for the Slam crew which they‘re hoping will make a name for itself with a slightly more disco-based house style, but don‘t worry, I‘m sure they don‘t mean The Village People. Lots of big-name guest 0.15.

I Radio City at the Mayfair (Cameo Suite). 10pm—2.30am. £2. Sixties rock merging surprisingly well with 905 rave, with the odd dance record thrown in too. I Rumble at Joe Paparazzi. 10pm-3.30am. £3 (£1 student). The only problem with Rumble is that it’s so dark, so big and so popular that if you’re hoping to see friends there you really have to arrange it well in advance. Pcrsonally,l wish they wouldn’t inflict full half-hours of bleep-bleep-twiddle on us, but those cavernous green shapes the lasers throw up keep boredom at bay during them. See you on the stairs at half-past one.

I Shag at Fury Murry‘s. llpm—late. £2.50. Enjoyable mish-mash of indie-dance , pop, classic chart hits and silly singalongs. Plus free chocolate.

I Temptation at Strathclyde University. 9pm—2am. £1.50. Students and guests only. New look to Level 8, with

DJ -about-town Tam Coyie dishing out his usual enjoyable indie-dance sensations for the studcs. Level 4 remains its usual sub-Sub Club self.

I Time Warp Rock Club at Club Hacienda. 10pm—4am. £2.50 (£6 for weekend ticket). After being flooded out of Henry Afrika’s, they‘re now temporarily doing the Time Warp at the Haccy, with rock music from the 605. 705, 805 and 905. All drinks £1 .

I The Tunnel 11pm—4am. £4. New lookto Fridays at the Tunnel brings with it the excitements of a gyroscope (one of those funny twirly things astronauts practise in) and a surfboard simulator on stage. Cor. On 22 Feb only, top indie dance band if? play live - see Rock listings for more details.

I The Alhambra 8pm—2am. Free.

I Bennet's11pm-3.30am.£2.50.

I Blaze at Glasgow School of Art.

NOT IF? BUT WHEN

The question mark at the end of their name is placed there tor aesthetic appeal, but it’s unnecessary. There is no doubt that It? are going to make it. This month’s media darlings, universally touted as the-group- most-iiker-to, have, on the basis of one single, been accorded the sort at critical acclaim usually reserved ior Anthony H. Wilson’s Factory acts. So lar, so last. But, like all the best bands, they’ve a long tale to tell.

it starts in 1989, when baby ravers headed tor the tlelds in another summer at love, and an assortment at older, wiser artistic types iounded a drinking and dancing den in Soho and

settled down. Among them were ionner '

Jo-iioxers Sean Mcluskey and Rob Marche, two musicians seeking an outlet lorthelr excess energies. The Brain Club soon started regular sessions, Sean and Rob soon lound a singer in the wailishly appealing Paul Wells, and, in time, they recorded a

single. Released by The Brain's altiliated label, aralniac records, ior club use, its success on the nation’s danceiioors led MCA to pick up the band. The rest is, as they say, history. Like Soul II Soul, ll? are an amorphous body built around a club nucleus, but diversifying into other related commercial ventures, taking aspects ol an underground litestyle and making them consumer products. They are a disparate lot, without a deliberately conceived image, and the music too is intended to exclude categorisation. Starting with ‘punk as

an attitude’, identity and independence are fused with a clear understanding at what they want to achieve. It? won’t be jumping, Soup Dragons-style, on anybody's bandwagon.

‘Our sound is the way torward ior any indie-rock band who are lost for the way to go,’ says drummer Sean. ‘We’re trying to progress on the dance side - including machines like sequencers and synthesisers, but keeping proper instruments as a ieature.’ Their debut single, ‘Saturday’s Angels’, is a sublime example at that. Dreamlly murmured lines about angel wings, diamond rings and Man Utd winning the European Cup, are submerged under a wash oi enchanting rhythms and real guitar. What more could a girl want?
