Replacingtheirlong-running and highly successful Joy, icon is the brave new hope for the Slam crew which they‘re hoping will make a name for itself with a slightly more disco-based house style, but don‘t worry, I‘m sure they don‘t mean The Village People. Lots of big-name guest 0.15.
I Radio City at the Mayfair (Cameo Suite). 10pm—2.30am. £2. Sixties rock merging surprisingly well with 905 rave, with the odd dance record thrown in too. I Rumble at Joe Paparazzi. 10pm-3.30am. £3 (£1 student). The only problem with Rumble is that it’s so dark, so big and so popular that if you’re hoping to see friends there you really have to arrange it well in advance. Pcrsonally,l wish they wouldn’t inflict full half-hours of bleep-bleep-twiddle on us, but those cavernous green shapes the lasers throw up keep boredom at bay during them. See you on the stairs at half-past one.

DJ -about-town Tam Coyie dishing out his usual enjoyable indie-dance sensations for the studcs. Level 4 remains its usual sub-Sub Club self.

The question mark at the end of their name is placed there tor aesthetic appeal, but it’s unnecessary. There is no doubt that It? are going to make it. This month’s media darlings, universally touted as the-group- most-iiker-to, have, on the basis of one single, been accorded the sort at critical acclaim usually reserved ior Anthony H. Like Soul II Soul, ll? are an amorphous body built around a club nucleus, but diversifying into other related commercial ventures, taking aspects ol an underground litestyle and making them consumer products. an attitude’, identity and independence are fused with a clear understanding at what they want to achieve. It? won’t be jumping, Soup Dragons-style, on anybody's bandwagon.
‘Our sound is the way torward ior any indie-rock band who are lost for the way to go,’ says drummer Sean. ‘We’re trying to progress on the dance side - including machines like sequencers and synthesisers, but keeping proper instruments as a ieature.’ Their debut single, ‘Saturday’s Angels’, is a sublime example at that. Dreamlly murmured lines about angel wings, diamond rings and Man Utd winning the European Cup, are submerged under a wash oi enchanting rhythms and real guitar. What more could a girl want?
