guests. The rough edges have been sanded down and the eccentricity diluted, but Cud remain one of the country’s truly independent bands. Despite others' attempts to align their excellent Leggy Mambo album with the indie dance phenomenon, they still retain their idiosyncratic sound, helped no doubt by the distinctive howl of enigmatic frontman Carl Puttnam.

I The BMX Bandits and The Wake King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut, 272a St Vincent Street, 221 5279. 10pm. Recently returned from a jaunt to Norway, The BMX Bandits continue to pick up sizeable crowds on their frequent appearances in Glasgow, and seem to be approaching greater success than ever. The Wake celebrate the indie success of their Make It Loud album with a typically delicate support set.

The popularity of the Wild River Apples on home ground is hardly a debatable issue, and attendance tonight is likely to be encouraging owing to their lack of recent live appearances, but what is irritating is the fact that over 18 months on a major label has produced just one extremely dull single. At this rate Ican’t see the rest of the world rushingto embrace them as wholeheartedly as their home town.

The voice is certainly rich and masterful, but the songs are nothing to shout about — justTerence Trent D‘Arby without the acrobatics or the uptempo beat.
