ROCK & BLUES

ROCK BLUES

FRIDAY 22 Glasgow

I David Lee Roth SECC, Finnieston Quay, 248 3000. 7.30pm. £13. Tickets from usual outlets. Embraced globally by feminists and sensitive souls alike, David Lee Roth combines glamour and hedonism with the stage presence ofa megalomaniac to produce one of the most visually entertaining shows to hit these shores. Which is just as well, because he hasa formidable supply of dreadful songs to compensate for.

I The Wendys and saidiiorence King Tut‘s Wah Wah Hut, 2723 St Vincent Street, 221 5279. 10pm. £3.50. Factory‘s shimmering new hopes. . . Edinburgh’s finest. . .blah. blah. . . Quite possibly not the wayThe Wendys would like to be perceived, but they're saddled with it now. so they‘ll just have to get down to the business of justifying the hype. lfthe indie delights of the debut single are anything to go by, it shouldn't be an impossible task. Local lads saidflorence seem a curious choice of support, combining heavy guitars, epic keyboards and solid funky basslines.

SATURDAY 23 Glasgow

I Edwyn Collins Queen Margaret Union, University Gardens. 339 9784. 8pm. £5.50 (advance), £6 (door). Students and guests. The last time Edwyn Collins shilly-shallied on to the OM stage. the capacity crowd demanded three wholly deserved encores. lfanything, Scotland‘s Mr Janglequirkpop has increased in stature and popularity since then, so bring a sleeping bag— it may be a long set.

I Havana 3am King Tut‘s Wah Wah Hut. 272a St Vincent Street, 221 5279. 10pm. £4. Paul Simonon‘s new group seek to blend influences in the same way his old group The Clash managed to do. The single ‘Reach the Rock‘ is a fairly uninspired piece of reggaebilly posturing which has been dealt a lukewarm reception by most, but the eponymous album hot on its heels better stands up to expectations.

I The Humpil Family Jordanhill College, 76 Southbrae Drive, 9503000. Compulsive dance material, and not a Soul 11 Soul beat to be heard. This chaotic clan of professional revellers frequently provoke their audience to unprecedented bouts of frenzied leg-shaking excesses with their convincing blend ofcajun. country and folk influences.

I John Wesley Harding. Pleasure Touch and Painted Harlem Studio. 12 Shuttle Street. Paisley. 889 6867. 9.30pm. £1 .SOSee preview for John Wesley Harding. Pleasure Touch is the new name for the Lezli R Band, and Miss R, if you need reminding, played keyboards for Hue and Cry in her spare time.

I The Wendys Toledo Junction. Greenock. See Fri 22.

I Electric Daisies Christie's. Alexandria. 0389 57799. 9pm. Free. Part ofthe Barky! Barky Cumbernauld crew. Electric Daisies play that most welcome of sub-genres. funk metal. as espoused by Faith No More and their ilk. There is however a limit to the amount of funk they can inject without a bass guitar. so would the chancer who stole it from their rehearsal room return it pronto or suffer an eternity of guilt-ridden misery.

I Priest Town Halt Bar. 160Woodlands Road, 332 1210. 9.30pm. Free. Liverpudlian band owing more than a passing debt to Scouse gods Echo and the Bunnymen.

I Birdland, Chunk and Electric Daisies Mayfair, 490 Sauchiehall Street, 332 3872. £5.40 plus booking fee. Tickets from Just the Ticket. Virgin, Union Street, 226 4679. The blonde bimbos return to inflict more uninspired tantrums on their unfortunate audience. There comes a time when you can‘t make excuses for them anymore they haven‘t released a good single in aeons (because they‘ve been releasing the same single for aeons) and their live shows are all volume and no substance. Or maybe that‘s just when they play in Glasgow.

I John Wesley Harding Biko Bar. Queen Margaret Union. University Gardens, 339 9784. Free. Students and guests. See preview.

I Asmo Plaza, Eglinton T011. 423 3077. 3pm. £10. Tickets on the door. Phone 557 2858 for more details. A bit of an unknown quantity it seems. but included here on the ‘Detramental' tour as the sole live act at this Plaza All-Dayer. and appearing onstage at 5pm.

MONDAY 25 Glasgow

I The Farm and Top Barrowland, 244 Gallowgate, 552 4601. SOLD OUT. The most Iaddish old men in the business adjust their hearing aids and attempt to sing in tune when they manage that, then The Farm‘s live reputation is wholly justified. Tonight‘s sell-out may prove to be a tougher test than the highly favourable rave atmosphere at their pre-Christmas Plaza bash, but The Soup Dragons pulled it off at Barrowland. so why not the old (farm) hands? Support band Top resurrect Merseybeat and melody in an effort to confirm Liverpool‘s regained musical stature.

I Dumpy’s Rusty Huts King Tut’sWah Wah Hut. 272a St Vincent Street, 221 5279. 10pm. £4. Years in the business seems to count for a lot when it comesto explaining the respect Dumpy‘s Rusty Nuts command. Few could now dare to knock them . . . so neither willwe.

I Jam Session Cafe Expresso Bongo, 30 Quarry Street, Hamilton, 0698 458174. 8pm. Free. This highly successfulevening is fast becoming an autograph hunter‘s paradise. Jim Soup Dragon and various members of Teenage Fanclub and The Groovy Little Numbers converge with local jazz musicians for a bit of spontaneous combustion . . .sorry. composition.

Edinburgh

I The Big Dish and The McCluskeys Queen‘s Hall. South Clerk Street. 668 2019. After a chequered history. The Big Dish have hit the heights with 'Miss America‘ on their new label. East West,so this gig should be packed out.

I Birdland. Chunir and Realm ofthe Shopping Trolley Network. West TollcrOSs. 228 3252. See Sun 24. Local support, Realm of the Shopping Trolley, are a loud. spikey noise, whose force is far too contained on tape - they have to be experienced live.

I Tongue ol Alba. A Whole New Jungle and The Probes Venue, Calton Road. 557 3073. The Probes seem to be playing more gigs than just about anyone at the moment, A Whole New Jungle have reformed. though whether they‘re still a firestorm ofguitars we haven't found out yet. and Tongue of Alba should wind the night up in grungey style.

I Root Love Preservation Hall. Victoria Street. 226 3816. 9.30pm. Free. Melodic and intelligent material a band to be watched.
