SPORT
UNION STRUGGLE
Will Carling hoping for revenge.
BBC viewers last year voted Scotland's triumphant Grand Slam winning side team oi the year for their Rugby Union exploits. Undoubtedly the highlight ol the Five Nations season lor their supporters was the carelulIy-planned deleat at a seemingly invincible England side at Murraylield. Despite the strength and mobility ol England's Bath-dominated team, the Scots gained a psychological advantage lrorn the outset, and didn't let up till the game was over. Many an overcontident souvenir sellerwent home miserably carrying a suitcase lull ol England Grand Slam T-shirts, and with a
much-depleted bank account.
Narrow deleat by France in a dour tussle in Paris has put the Grand Slam out ol sight lor Scotland this year, but alter their convincing 32-1 2 victory overthe Welsh at Murrayfield, the Triple Crown is still a possibility. On the other hand, the English are unlikely to be as damagingly overcontident as they were last spring, and on their home turf atTwickenham will present a tougher Iront than at Murraylield.
Will Carling’s team started uncertainty against Wales and will not have had the extra game to discover their style, as the Scots seem to have. Going by the pattern ol previous matches, a vital factor in the game could well be the standard of goal-kicking. England's superb kicking won the match lorthem at Cardiff, and Scotland will have to be on their guard it they are not to concede a lot of points from this source. Scots kickers, Craig Chalmers, and, lorthe longer attempts, Gavin Hastings are quite capable of causing similar problems lorthe English. Although an open game is to be hoped tor, it could well come down to each team's degree of accuracy with the boot which decides the victor.
Whatever the outcome, the game promises to be a lascinating encounter. and the bookies will be watching closely belore ottering odds lor the World Cup in October. (Tom Lappin)
