Raymond Moore, Street Level, Glasgow. ‘i am impelled to choose or select those happenings that most accurately retlect or mirror a state at being at that one moment in time.’ (Raymond Moore, d. 1987)
Raymond Moore's photographs are more than the sum oi their parts. This is a world at hall-thoughts sensed then gone. Cracks at light tleetingly catch the edges oi steps or creased sand at the day’s end in 'Pembrokeshire1967’. Haze on a sea-mist lllters early morning air; streets are glimpsed through patches ol net curtains— lncidental reflections in shop windows are made particular. The owners have locked up and the interior blind or tarpauiin is pulled over.
This is an austere world characterised by a strong sense ol design and an economy oi line. A telegraph pole reaches bleakly into the sky, a country road stretches to intinity,
tences and whitewashed stone walls make frontal horizontals as do beaches and sea edges.
This is Pembrokeshlre and the coastal towns and countryside oi north-west Britain photographed early in the morning or attwiilght when time and location are independent oi human intentions. Place and the absurd are born out at prosaic observation and deadpan delivery.
Light is at the heart of photography and Moore’s use is distinctive tor he makes an arltorm out at llat light. Not once does the sun appear. The Innuit Eskimos have tilteen or more words tor snow: Moore does the same lor grey skies. A very line and particular sensibility is at work here. These photographs untold in the mind and letter with intent. Never has the phrase, less is more, seemed more apt. (Fiona Byme-Sutton)
