FILM
Karen Allen. 115 mins. Ford plays adventuring archaeologist Indiana Jones, who almost bites off more than he can chew when he turns up the Ark ofthe Covenant in Nazi-infested wartime Egypt. Return to the breathless excitement ofthe Saturday morning serial with this rolle rcoaster of a movie. probably better than either of its sequels. Tongue held very firmly in cheek. Glasgow: GFT. I Ran (15) (Akira Kurosawa. J apan/France, 1985) Tatsuya Nakadai, Mieko l-larada. Akira Tcrao. 162 mins. Kurosawa‘s King Lear is a bleak and despairing vision of mankind torn apart by disunity. personal vengeances and family feuds that produce no honour, no victors. just victims. An accomplished fusion of Japanese history and blood-drenched Shakespearean drama, this film grows more impressive with repeated viewings. Edinburgh University Film Society. I Rebel Without A Cause ( 18) (Nicholas Ray. US. 1956) James Dean, Natalie Wood, Jim Backus, Sal Mineo. 111 mins. Seminal youth movie has Dean asa sensitive but misunderstood kid battlingto communicate with his parents and caught in the violent struggle for self-definition. Though irrevocably dated by now, this is still notable as the film that articulated the until-then unrecognised experiences and aspirations of a whole generation and does of course contain our favourite nostalgia icon in full flow. Edinburgh: Filmhouse. I Repulsion (18) (Roman Polanski, UK, 1965) Catherine Deneuve, lan Hendry, John Fraser. 105 mins. Left on her own in her sister‘s flat for a few days, asexually repressed young woman gradually deteriorates towards complete mental breakdown. Polanski's first English language movie remains one of his best, a genuinely disturbing exploration of intense paranoia and claustrophobia that unfiinchingly picks at the audience‘s deepest neuroses. Edinburgh University Film Society. I Reversal of Fortune ( 15) (Barbet Schroeder, US, 1990) Jeremy lrons, Glenn Close, Ron Silver. 111 mins. Dramatic reconstruction, via Jewish American defence lawyer Alan Dershowitz‘ book, of the famous Von Bulow case, in which the European aristocrat (played with typical detachment by Irons) was convicted of attempting to murder his fantastically rich wife (Close). The film follows his appeal, led by the exaggeratedly flamboyant Silver as Dershowitz, but for legal reasons is unable to offer any judgement on his guilt or innocence, and does little more than intrigue and eventually frustrate the audience. Glasgow: Odeon. Edinburgh: UCI. I Rio Grande (15) (John Ford, US,1950) John Wayne, Maureen O‘Hara, Ben Johnson, Harry Carey Jr. 105 mins. The final part of Ford’s Western trilogy has Wayne’s Colonel York fightingtwin battles for dignity and control — one on the Mexican border, where the darned lnjuns are still up to their tricks, and the otherin the bosom of his family. Pulled off with a certain panache, but too full of sentimental music and dull plotting. Edinburgh: Film Guild. I Rocky V (PG) (John G. Avildsen, US. 1990) Sylvester Stallone , Talia Shire, Burt Young, Sage Stallone. 104 mins. All that battering has taken its toll and Rocky discovers he’s brain-damaged (no, don’t titter). Thanks to an unscrupulous accountant, he’s broke too, and his son‘s having a rough time at school. What to do? Become a trainer/manager, of course. But when his disciple (Young) gets lured away by big money, Rocky finds vicarious victory eluding him. The last (we‘re promised) and most subtle of the sequence , but that‘s not saying much. Glasgow: Cannon The Forge, Odeon. Edinburgh: Odeon, UCI. Central: Cannon. Strathclyde: Cannon. Odeon Ayr, Odeon Hamilton, UCl Clydebank.
UCl East Kilbride. I The Rookie (15) (Clint Eastwood. US, 1990) Clint Eastwood, Charlie Sheen. Raul Julia. Sonia Braga. 107 mins. Weather-beaten LA. cop Eastwood gets a sensitive new boy to break in after his previous partner's killing. Though initially mistrustful of one another. their exposure to common dangers . . . hey, waida minnit . . . ain't we hoid this befawsomewhere? Um — yes, actually. Glasgow: Cannon The Forge. Edinburgh: Dominion, UCl. Strathclyde: La Scala, UCI Clydebank. UCl East Kilbride. I sex. lies and videotape (15) (Steven Soderbergh, US, 1989) Andie McDowell, Laura San Giacomo, J amcs Spader, Peter Gallagher. 101 mins. The sex: John (Gallagher) is conducting a steamy affair with his sister-in-law Cynthia (San Giacomo). The lies: they neglect to tell his wife, Anne (McDowell). The videotape: John‘s buddy Graham (Spader) gets his kicks by filming women‘s sexual confessions. 26-year-old Soderbergh‘s first feature is a strikingly assured, funny and thoughtful piece of work, forcing us to examine our own attitudes toward sex, and won the Palme d‘Or at Cannes. Glasgow: GFT. I Shirley Valentine (15) (Lewis Gilbert. UK. 1989) Pauline Collins, Bernard Hill, Tom Conti. 110 mins. Gilbert‘s screen version of the celebrated Willy Russell play, now expanded from a monologue to include Hill as the insensitive hubby and Conti as the Greek bit of stuffShirley meets on a Mediterranean holiday that turns into a voyage ofself-(rc)discovery. Collins is outstanding in the title role of frustrated Liverpudlian housewife. Central: MacRobert Arts Centre. I The Song Remain: The Same (PG) (Peter Clifton & Joe Massot, UK, 1976) Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones, John Bonham, Peter Grant. 136 mins. Now look, if two-and-a-quarter hours of bangin' yer heid to the metal mania ofa long-defunct rock dinosaur appeals, then that’s okay. We don’t want to put you off (if you‘re a hardcore Zeppie you’ll go anyway), but the 1973-vintage concert footage is positively absorbing compared to the ludicrous wish-fulfilment fantasies someone let the band members and manager Grant commit to celluloid. Edinburgh: Cameo. I Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (PG) (Steve Barron, US. 1990)Judith Hoag, Elias Koteas, Josh Pais, Michelan Sisti, Leif Tilden, David Forman. 93 mins. You've read the hype, played the video game, seen the trailers, used the toothpaste . played with the toys, eaten the pizza. What the hell — go treat yourself to the real garbage. Made cheaply, made millions. Edinburgh: UCl. Strathclyde: Odeon Ayr, UCI Clydebank. UCl East Kilbride. I The Terminator (18) (James Cameron, US, 1984) Arnold Schwarzenegger. Michael Biehn, Linda Hamilton. 107 mins. In 2029 machines have all but conquered the planet but a saviour is at hand in the form of a new human leader. The machines respond by sending Schwarzenegger's cyborg back in time to 1984 on a mission to kill the future leader’s mother. Inventive, excitingly-paced science-fiction adventure with a notable performance from Arnie in his first villainous role. Edinburgh: Cameo. I This is Spinal Tap (15) (Rob Reiner, US, 1983) Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, Harry Shearer, R.J. Parnell, Ed Begley Jr. 82 mins. Certainly the most ingenious, accurate and funny of all spoof rockumentaries, with wonderfully spontaneous dialogue, convincing fiy-on-the-wall camera work, self-penned heavy metal parodies, and of course the amp that goes to 11. Edinburgh: Cameo. I Three Men and a Little Letty (PG) (Emile Ardolino, US, 1990) Tom Selleck,Steve Guttenberg, Ted Danson, Nancy Travis, Robin Weisman. 104 mins. See review.
