If the thought of ‘Living in a Rainforesf’ conjures up a picture of a mass of trees and the endless wearing of wellies and sou'westers, then it’s time that The Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh got hold of you. Living in a Rainforest isan imaginative project running throughout
l99l, bringing the experience of life in a
Bornean Ionghouse alive for visitors. The project has taken three years to plan, culminating at the end of last year with the erection of the steel framework of the house. Appropriately, local schoolchildren have helped to construct the roof under which hundreds of fellow schoolchildren will pass as they learn about the various aspects of the rainforest; crafts, food, work, plant and animal life. School bookings are heavy as far as July but there is also a family workshop programme on Saturday mornings so that parents can join in. Workshops cover such topics as learning about the foods, oils and spices in the forest, mask-making and shadow puppets. A performance by Dandelion Puppets in March will demonstrate the plight of the ralnforests, using shadow puppets. In April, as part of the Edinburgh International Science Festival, there will be a special two-day package for families to explore the plant life at the Botanics and animal life at the Zoo. All these activities will have limited places so early booking is advisable (see Listings) and forget the sou’wester- wear a sweatband.
