Strathclyde: Odeon Ayr. I Fantasia (U) (Ben Sharpsteen. US, 1940) The voice of Deems Taylor; music played by the Philadelphia Orchestra. conducted by Leopold Stokowski. 135 mins. Fully restored to mark its 50th anniversary. Walt Disney‘s semi-abstract feature remains a unique and astonishing achievement. Almost equally lauded and loathed. it contains some visually stunning material as well as some rather embarrassing kitsch, but surely the most memorable sequence is The Sorcerer’s Apprentice starring Mickey Mouse (endowed for the first time with pupils instead of button eyes). Glasgow: Cannon The Forge. Odeon. Edinburgh: Odeon, UCI. Strathclyde: UCl Clydebank. I Une Femme Est Une Femme (18) (Jean-Luc Godard. France. 1961) Anna Karina. Jean-Paul Belmondo. Jean-Claude Brialy. 80 mins. Godard‘s wife Karina plays a stripper seeking security and motherhood in this gritty - mid-Sixties exercise in Gallic strectwise style that went through some censorship trouble in Britain on account of its sexual content. In its attempts at hard-edged economic analysis. there is perhaps also an indication of the director‘s politicised excesses to come. Edinburgh: Filmhouse. I The Field (12) (Jim Sheridan. lreland. 1990) Richard Harris. Brenda Fricker. Tom Berenger. John Hurt. 1 10mins. Remaining in his native Emerald lsle. I The Garden ( 18) (Derek Jarman. UK. 1990) Tilda Swinton. Johnny Mills. Kevin ('ollins. Roger Cook. 92 mins. Jarman's latest film. shot partly in his own garden in Dungeness. preserves the extra-narrative direction of his earlier work. but bears witness to a growing intensity. The story that gradually emerges parallels the sufferingol'Christ with a lattcrday passion story about the oppression ofhomosexuals
Kindergarten Cop (12) (Ivan Reitman, US, 1990) Arnold Schwarzenegger, Penelope Ann Miller, Pamela Reed, Richard Tyson. 111 mins. It must have seemed a good comedy idea: Arnie undercover as a kindergarten teacher. It might have worked too had director Ivan Reitman had the faintest grasp of his intended audience. Brilliantly opening like some Dirty Harry parody, the initial ‘party-pooper' setpiece should go down in the Amie's Greatest Moments catalogue; yet having captured the action-man crowd Reltman’s attention shifts to the family market that lapped up Twins, and a mind-staggerineg contrived plot soon has the big lad surrounded by a bunch of relentlessly cute toddlers. There’s more to come though, for before it’s all over we've returned to hard violence - Total Recall had nothing on this one for schizophrenia.
For all that, it’s predictable as hell. LA cop Kimble has to locate the long-missing wife and child of a killer named Crisp (Tyson) and get herto testify against him. Trouble is, there are no recent pictures and all the fuzz know is that the little boy goes to school in smalltown Oregon, but unfortunately the baddie’s on the case too and he and
his momma (Caroll Baker) want the kid back. Still. despite initial disasters Arnie naturally proves a born teacher, turning the problem class into the school's pride and (yes, you guessed) falling in love with the very mum he's supposed to be tracking down.
The obvious slapstick humour is enjoyable enough, but what really rankles is Reitman’s way with serious issues. The broken families angle gets a sentimentally trite and simplistic treatment but even that palls beside the reprehensible exploitation of child abuse for an easy emotional charge. Such unpalatable touches aside, Scwarzenegger is on excellent form as tough cop and romantic lead, while Pamela Reed as his cop sidekick works wonders with a role that starts as a plot device and works down. End of term report: attention has a tendency to ; wander, could do better. (Mike Davies) ;
