Peter and Kate McCallister (Heard and O‘Hara) have an eight-year-old brat and wisely — albeit accidentally — leave him behind in Chicago when they go on holiday to Paris. Left to his own devices young Kevin (Culkin) has to deal with two bungling burglars (Pcsci and Stern) who threaten to invade his peaceful haven. Hopper‘s homage tofilm noir is set in small-town Texas. where Johnson's amoral drifter sweet-talks his way into a job as a car salesman. and soon finds himselftorn between two women. one ofwhom happens to be married to his employer. Poland. 1989) Wojtek Psoniak. Ewa Dalkowska. Piotr Kozlowski. Marzena Tryblala. 113 mins. The Polish master’s tribute to the heroic Jewish doctor J anusz Korczak (a superb Psoniak) is a simply told and brutally honest portrait of a strong. decent but doomed man. Beginning in 1939. it chronicles the Holocaust years from the German occupation of Warsaw to Korczak‘s death in a concentration camp with pride. dignity and unsentimental sensitivity. Kenneth Mars. 83 mins. Based on a Hans Christian Andersen fairytale. the latest Disney animated feature may not quite rank with the glories ofWalt‘s distant past but displays an impressive
attention to detail. bags of humour and a set of truly tacky songs. Glum version of the Vladimir Nabokov novel in which hapless. middle-aged professor Mason becomes besotted by the charms of precocious nymphet Lyon. I Longtlme Companion ( 15) (Norman Rene. US. 1989) Bruce Davison. Scott Campbell. Dermot Mulroney. 96mins. Taking its title from the somewhat euphemistic phrase favoured by newspaper obituary columns to describe the partners of gay men who die ofAlDS. Norman Rene's humane. witty and moving drama tells the story of a group of friends and their reactions to the changes in their world from the moment in 1981 when they notice a small article in the New York Times warning of a ‘rare cancer‘ apparently attacking male homosexuals. This first mainstream release to chronicle the continuing fatal effects of the AIDS virus on the gay community offers a well-acted and emotionally approachable portrait of courage and support in time of

Bergman‘s version of Mozart is set in an actual theatre where a modern audience watch an 18th century performance. The result is sympathetically attuned to the talents of his performers but still a fairly frothy addition to the Swede‘s canon of faithless anguish. Edinburgh: Filmhousc. I Metropolitan (15) (Whit Stillman. US. 1989) Carolyn Farina. Edward Clements. Christoper Eigeman. Taylor Nichols. 98 mins. Reworking ofJanc Austen in modern New York. where a collection of ‘ths‘ (Urban Haute Bourgeoisie) exchange urbane. ironic banter on the three Ls — life. love and literature. Intelligent. meditative satire from precocious newcomer. Glasgow: GFT. I Miami Blues (18) (George Armitage. US. 1990) Alec Baldwin. Fred Ward. Jennifer Jason Leigh. 97 mins. Formula cop thriller meets social satire in Armitage‘s ambitious but not wholly successful parody. which attempts to expose the shallowness of Florida society and glossy police drama. Enthusiastically quirky performances from Baldwin as the hood. A rambling estate in the South of France and satyr-like' old reprobatc Piccoli is in for a prolonged bout of domestic discord when the members of his bickering family come together to sort out grandma‘s will. Their discord is increased by the worrisome news emerging from 1968 Paris. Certainly. there‘s a good comedy to be made about the plight of the bourgeoisie duringthis period. but Malle‘s latest. a cross between Brian Rix and Bunuel with settings by Renoir. isn't it. Goldblum's Mister Frost is a sinister figure whose British estate is littered with bloodless corpses. and who initially maintains a stony silence about his motives for their murder. Gradually. Batcs' police inspector and Baker‘s psychiatrist are drawn into a web of intrigue as to Mister Frost‘s real identity— which transpires to be more dangerous than anyone could imagine. Bastian Balthazar Bux (Brandis) meets up with friends old and new. and when imagination comes under threat. he once again participates in the struggle between good and evil.
