The small sitting room is strewn with brightly painted canvases. The young Czech artist Vladimir Kokolia is understandably bemused. fie stares at me and back out of the window at the waiting Trabant taxi: ‘You have come all the way from Glasgow, and you are here in Brno for only 45 minutes!’ . . . lt’s September 17, and i have just begun a whistlestop journey across Central and Eastern Europe beginning in Brno, Czechoslovakia and ending in Ljubljana in the north of Yugoslavia. En route: Bratislava, Budapest, Bucharest, Sofia, Belgrade, Zagreb . . . l have to select an exhibition for Points East. Points East? Third Eye Centre’s season of new art and theatre/performance plus three-day conference, which is the Centre‘s final special event for Glasgow’s year as European City of Culture.
One year ago, a wave of revolutions, unprecendented, unpredicted, swept through Eastern Europe. What are the implication for European Culture?
POINTS EAST
’s-s'
What kind of changes are taking place in Central and Eastern Europe? Third Eye Centre and New Beginnings’ experience (it was New Beginnings who put together Glasgow’s 1989 Soviet Season) has enabled Points East to become the first major event in the UK to address these questions.
Meanwhile, only two weeks ago, the exhibition (‘Expressions'j confirmed its final artist. A name given to me in the offices of a museum in Budapest led to a letter working its way through the labyrinthine Soviet postage system to Koka Ramishvili, an artist in Tbilisi in Georgia. It was too late for him to come or transport work, so he sent beautiful drawings of a piece to be made by us on his behalf. it is a sculpture which includes rough concrete and a stack of handmade, velvet-covered books. What will it look like? We will know on December 12. (Andrew Nairne, exhibitions director, Third Eye Centre)
