I The Killing Time. MacArthur Park and Elephant Noise Stigma. Tuxedo Princess. Anderston Quay. 204 1150. 9pm. £2. The Killing Time have proved to be one ofthe most popular bands to play Stigma to date. and thus are rewarded with a headline slot. MacArthur Park are described as a more soulful version of l lue and Cry— sounds irrepressibly dull but the record companies. true to form. will soon be barking up their tree. Edinburgh's Elephant Noise see fit to object toevery comparison we make. so 'see for yourself‘ seems the best option here.
I Engine and Atomseed Videodrome. 33—39 York Street. 221 0441. 8pm. £2.50. See Wed 28. Support band The Atom Seed are a vaguely funk-tinged rock band in the Faith No More'Chilli Peppers vein. I The Bootleg Beatles King'sThcatre. Bath Street. 227 551 1. More like The Beatles than The Beatles themselves. we‘re led to believe. 1 low many groups are there making a living otlt ofdoing this'.’ I Way Out Studio. 12 Shuttle Street. Paisley. 889 6867. 9pm. £1 .

I Deicide Moshpit. Venue. Calton Road. 557 3073. Not just any old wimpy Satan-worshipers. but real anti-Christian activists from the USA. where. as you can imagine. men with upside-down crosses
too well. A seriously nasty bunch. by all accounts. Beware flying entrails.

I The Spanners Trading Post. The Shore. 553 5153. 9pm. Free.

I Paul Young and Two Way Street Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. 2 Sauchiehall Street. 332 3123. 7.30pm. £10. £9. Ticketsfrom theTicket Centre. Candleriggs. 2275511. What's the point in having a highly acclaimed soulful voice if you‘re going to croon ineffectually through a catalogue of thin excuses'.’ Any more MOR twaddle from Paul and he can fully expect to become the next housewives‘ favourite. Move over Shakcy and Cliff. you dance too well (comparatively speaking). I The Mission Barrowland. 244 (iallowgate. 552 4601. 7.30pm. £8 plus booking fee. Tickets from Just theTicket. I Virgin. linion Street. 226 4679. The .Vlish ran out of idcas long before they reached the third album — the epic brilliance of ‘The Crystal ()cean' must have ultimately knocked the creative stuffing out ofthem. 5 Now they seem content to rehash Led 3 Zeppelin‘sblander. acoustic moments (knowing the devoted legions will still support them) as on the new single.so i unchallenging its name escapes me. What
they need is a good dance remix upthe backside (did 1 say that'.’). ' I The Charlie Horse Studio. 12 Shuttle ' Street. Paislcy.889 6867. 1()pm. £1.

TUESDAY 4 Glasgow
I James Barrowland. 244 Crallowgate. 552 4601. 7.30pm. £6 plus booking fee. Tickets from Just the Ticket. Virgin. Union Street. 226 4679. The last few years have seen James come into their own asa gripping live band. outgrow-ing and invalidating their image as the whey-faced. precious literati of the independent scene with some tub-thumping contemporary pop tunes and not-to-be-sniffed-at merchandise sales. The only thing they haven‘t lost is the intensity and quirkiness that first brought them to everyone‘s attention. Dance Factory may be laying on a bus afterwards to transport interested parties to the Loop gig.
I Dave Stewart and the Spiritual Cowboys Tunnel. 84 Mitchell Street. 204 1000. 10pm. £7. Tickets from Just theTicket. Virgin. Union Street. 226 4679. Picking up tentatively optimistic live reviews all over the shop for recent London shows. sol guess now would not be the time to announce a general revulsion for everything Dave Stewart‘s had a hand in recently. However the Cowboys‘ first single seems to have handsomely executed its appetite-whetting jobamong Eurythmics enthusiasts.
I Loop King Tut's Wah Wah llut. 272a St Vincent Street. 221 5279. 1()pm. £5.40plus booking fee. Tickets from Just the Ticket. Virgin. Union Street. 226 4679. The relentless killer riffmight be losingits force and intensity with over-exposure on vinyl — Loop have never been advocatesof elegant variation — but live. the combination of narcotic vocals and buzzsaw guitars remains as potent as the day you first heard ‘16 Dreams'. proving that they can turn regurgitation to their advantage. Tonight they take the stage at 11.30pm to allow for the masses vacating Barrowland. and note the change ofvenuc — not as far to run from Barrowland.
I The Opals Studio. 12 Shuttle Street. Paisley. 889 6867. 10pm. £1.50.

WEDNESDAY 5 Glasgow
I New Fast Automatic Dattodils Tunnel. 84 Mitchell Street. 204 1000. 1()pm. £5 plus booking fee. Tickets from Just the Ticket. Virgin. Union Street. 2264679. So ‘Fishes liyes‘ was hardly the single to capture the potential fans that slipped through ‘Big"s net — the Pigeon/tale album will take care of that — but New FADS never have to worry about making converts through vinyl because they can do it all duringtheir quirky frenetic shows. A packed King Tut‘s last time round was a good sign that they live up to their enviable live reputation.
I Rollin' Joe and the Jets Curlers. 256 Byres Road. 334 1284. 9pm. Free. Residency. See Wed 28.
