Bepossessed (15) (Bob Logan, US, 1990) Linda Blair, Ned Beatty, Leslie Nielsen, Lana Schwab. 85 mins. Deep American suburbia middle-aged housewife Nancy Aglet (Blair) is tormented by the return of a pestering demon that worms its way through her television screen and into her tummy. Before you can say pea-soup, Nancy’s spewing up over her lamily, frolicking on bouncing beds and expressing herself in a very strange voice indeed. It's not too long belore the Bible-bashing cheque-book brigade (Beatty and Schwab) move in on Nancy's spiritual torment with a live televised Exorcism-athon, but as their endeavours prove worse than useless world-weary veteran demon basher Father Jedediah Mayii (a desperately mugging Nielsen) is called out at retirement to light the good light against the forces of darkness once more.
Starting out as a straighttorward comic rehash ot the most lamous horror movie since Frankenstein (can you guess what it is yet, children?),

writer/director Bob Logan’s spool soon loses its way, plummeting into a plethora ol puerile boobs, burns and bra jokes aimed squarely at the crucial but dumb teen market. Despite the presence of Blair and a number of appropriately silly reference gags (ice cream cones screaming ‘lick me!‘), Repossessed often becomes less of an Exorcist parody than a retread ot the Porky’s school of juvenile wit.
Tailored to please the happily brainless but bound to disappoint enthusiastic fans of the supposed source, one wonders just how limited the audience is for in-joke Exorcist humour almost two decades since the original was released. But the tact remains that even those who enjoy a knowing titter will emerge leeling slightly short changed. (Howard MacNeil)
