EXORCIST ll
. s r" i" l ’0‘ ' . Exorcist Ill (18) (William Peter Blatty, 1990, US) George C. Scott, Jason Miller, Brad Dourii.110 mins. Strange things are happening in Georgetown, USA; a teen out walking alone at night ends up being crucified; a priest is murdered while taking confession and a nurse has all her internal organs replaced with rosary beads. The detective (Scott) is increasingly intrigued and matters come close to home when his clergyman best iriend becomes bottled blood and a crazy old dear attacks his lamin with a big pair oi scissors.
‘The killer drove an ingot into each oi his eyes, then cut oil his head!’ That sounds like a very agreeable horror movie moment, but untortunately like almost every other gruesome highlight in this ‘oiiicial sequel’ to the 1973 iilm, the actual event is missed out and it's Ieit to Scott to give a verbal description oi what should have been up there dripping irom the screen. Blame the
original Exorcist author Blatty who, here as both writer and director, seems more intent on wisecracking banter than delivering shocks and gore. Scott talks, talks and talks and eventually aiter about 100 pages oi meandering dialogue realises that the killings have something to do with a possessed and strangely publicity-hungry patient in the hospital (‘Tell the press that I am the Gemini Killerl’). Finally that means some Satanic pyrotechnics in the padded cell but by then it’s iartoo late. A botched, longwinded and wholly superiluous job, Exorcist Ill isn't irightening, isn’t iunny and holds absolutely no surprises. Let it die in peace. (Tom Tunney)

Who you gonna call‘.’ The down—at-heel and discredited slimefightcrs are back in business. after mayhem once more breaks out on the streets of New York. The effects look less cheap this time. lfyou liked it first time round you are on a winner here; ifyou were less than convinced. stay at home — you‘ve seen this one already. Edinburgh: UC1.Strathc1yde: Paisley Arts Centre. I Gone With The Wind (PG) (Victor Fleming. US. 1939) Clark Gable. Vivien Leigh. Olivia de Havilland. Leslie Howard. 221) mins. This new print has restored the original colour to the classic. fifty-year-old tale that brings alive the era of the civil war through gripping narrative and characterisation. remaining faithful to Margaret Mitchell‘s powerful novel. Glasgow: Salon. I GoodFellas ( 18) (Martin Scorsese. US. 1991)) Robert De Niro. Ray l.iotta.Joe Pesci. Lorraine Braco. Paul Sorvino. 145 mins. A return for Scorsese and De Niro to the creed of amoral violence seen in Mean Streets and Taxi Driver. Liotta plays Henry Hill. a real-life mufr'oso. while De Niro is his mentor in crime. And while the bullets. fists and carving knives fly.
Scorsese brings us back to that unavoidable question — yes. it‘s glamorous and lucrative to live this way. but can anyone really live with the consequences? Glasgow: Cannon Sauchiehall Street.
I Gospel According to St Matthew ( 15) (Pier Paolo Pasolini. Italy/France. 1964) Enrique lrazoqui. Margherita Carusa. Susanna Pasolini. 137 mins. Simple tale of an overtly political messiah driven by righteous anger at social injustice. This new print highlights the marvellous camera work all backed up by an imaginative score featuring anything from Bach to Billie Holiday. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.
I Grease (PG) (Randal Kleiser. US. 1978) John Travolta. Stockard Charming. Olivia Newton John. 110 mins. The long-running broadway show arrives on screen dripping with Fifties' nostalgia, cheery tunes, a high camp value and the winsome charms of the plastic Newton-John and the toothy Travolta. A nice collection of old timers enhance the cast. Glasgow: Grosvenor.
I Gremlins 2: The New Batch (12) (Joe Dante. US. 1990) Zach Galligan. Phoebe Cates. Christopher Lee. 107 mins. For once a sequel that matches the original. This time the scaly mini-monsters rampage through Glover's Manhattan media empire headquarters where there are genetic laboratories. hi-tech offices and even a television station at their malevolently frolicsome disposal. A reduced schmaltz factor. lots ofone-liners and an unpredictable smattering ofsly

I Henry V (PG) (Kenneth Branagh. UK. 1989) Kenneth Branagh. Derek Jacobi. Paul Scofield. Judi Dench. 137 mins. There are inevitable associations with Olivier in K.B.‘s choice of first feature. but he emerges with some credit as both director and performer. This is a much muddier version than its predecessor. both in the scrappy turmoil of the battle scenes and in the tempering ofzesty jingoism with an appreciation ofthe human cost of conflict. Portraying the young king as a careworn. rather sullen warrior. the film seems to offer a more complex reading of the text. even if Branagh‘s budgetary resources stint somewhat on the grandeur ofOlivier‘s charging horses. Glasgow: GET. Edinburgh: Broughton Film Society. Edinburgh Film Guild. I Highlander (15) (Russell Mulcahy. 11K. 1986) Christopher Lambert. Beatie Edney, Sean Connery. 111 mins. A handful of immortals battle through the centuries to win a mythical prize. A curious mixture of romance in lhth century heather and car chases in present day New York. the film is an inelegant. often ludicrous. but enjoyany daffy adventure. Lambert seems more at home with the contemporary passages and only the ever wonderful Connery has the requisite style for the kitsch Scottish scenes. Edinburgh: Cameo. I The Hitcher ( 18) (Robert Mandel. US. 1986) Rutger Hauer. C. Thomas Howell. Jennifer Jason Leigh. 98 mins. Drowsy driver Howell gets more than he bargained for when he picks up psycho-hitcher Hauer in this genuinely cdge-of—the-seat suspense thriller. Edinburgh: Cameo. University Film Society. I lntemal Aiiairs (18) (Mike Figgis. US. 1990) Richard Gere. Andy Garcia. Nancy Travis. 105 mins. 1n the wake of hisstylish homegrown debut Stormy Monday. IJSWS 3-0 (15) (Joe Alves. US. 1983) Dennis Quaid. Bess Armstrong. Simon McCorkindale, Lea Thompson. 99mins.
