"Cg. Patricia Macdonald: Order and Chaos:
Views oi Gala, Stills, Edinburgh. The idea that the completeness oi the
earth should be considered as a single
' living organism, and the notions oi
j chaos theory that have developed over 3 recent years in physics, have both been popularised in recentyears. It would seem on the surlace that they are
; incompatible notions, one
propounding wholeness and integration, and the other suggesting that at the foundation oi our physical lives lies a deeply unstable and unpredictable reality. Yet the two philosophies, developing at the same time, do have points oi similarity. The iirsi is suggesting a radical rethink at our relationship to physicality, and a humility and respect ior nature that has been singularly lacking in the ‘developed', industrial world. The second is that the orderthat we produce ior ourselves and cling to is in tact highly subjective and circumstantial.
Patricia Macdonald is well known ior
her aerial photographs. Apart irom exerting the lascination at providing an , unusual viewpoint, the bird's eye position, these have also provided an interpretation oi the landscape and what we are doing to it; she is iar irom content to provide the seductive pretty pictures that would be possible with this manner oi work. This exhibition goes one step iurther. The photographs take irom the air are juxtaposed with photographs oi the same area, ieature or object taken irom the ground. In this way, the rhythms that are present in nature, the ordering and disruption oi nature provided by us, and microcosm/ macrocosm corresponences are highlighted. An aerial photo oi Drummond Castle shows the straight lines oi a iormal garden imposed on the Perthshire landscape; an image at the garden’s statue oi the god Pan —the lord oi misrule- presides over it. What could be aerial photos turn out to be ‘ close-ups oi small plants; the Tyne l estuary in Lothian looks like the roots ’ at a plant. (Hilary Robinson)
