WHISTLING IN THE DARK
‘13.”, ’_
Whistler in Europe, Hunterian Gallery, Glasgow. This exhibition of etching drypoint and lithographs is an opportunity tor Whistler-lovers to become acquainted with a body of work for the pleasure which can be gleaned from it. Sensitivity oi touch is evident in Whistler’s drawing irom the start, giving his prints a sensuous quality. The early street scenes, cale scenes, nudes or portraits are rendered realistically. Later on, the artist begins to experiment with medium and line: the result is a series oi beautiful, unrelated prints. In particular, the combination of water and architecture in Venice and Amsterdam provided him
i
with an opportunity to explore texture and movement through a freer use at line, notable examples being Nocturne: Palaces, Venice; The Square House; and Pierrot, Amsterdam.
The compositional method also changes. Illusionist space is broken up in favour at a play with light and dark- light coming from blank paper as in A Courtyard, Brussels, rendered in suit hatched lines. Simultaneously with this paring down ol information, the surtace becomes more important, so a dappled tonality emerges. He is, in eltect, painting in black and white rather than drawing, a good example being The Embroidered Curtain. (Fiona Byrne Sutton)
