Bell was influenced by the Nazarenes. a community ofGerman history painters who taught him the technique of fresco painting in Rome. Bell was frustrated in his ambition to be a history painter in fresco. and his talents have long been overlooked.
Photographs from the Riddell Collection Until 28 Oct. The second exhibition drawing exclusively from this extensive collection. gifted in 1986. It includes 19th century views of Edinburgh. scenes of India. photogravures from Glasgow and some striking early views of Rome.
New Scottish Photography 7 Nov- 1 61 an 1991. Bringing together the work of seventeen contemporary photographers. this exhibition aims to display the variety and originality oftheir vision. as well as demonstrating the vital part photography has played in the recent resurgence of Scottish culture. Work ranges from straight black and white shots to an inventive synthesis of painting. sculpture. photography and words. Some exhibits remain within the Scottish tradition of documentary and landscape work. while others reflect the cross-currents and debates of late 20th century art.

Lustreware isa type of decorated pottery which involves firing metal oxides onto the clay under special conditions to give (as the name suggests) a lustrous finish. A difficultand unpredictable technique. it was widely used in the Middle East and Spain during the Middle Ages. but is now little practised. (‘aiger-Smith has been running a workshop specialising in lustrewarc since 1955'. his traditional designs contrast with the younger Taylor‘s more abstract work. Alice Kettle: Embroidery Until 30 Oct.
