MONDAY 29 Glasgow

I Jesse Garon and the Desperadoes and The Rhythm Kittens Third Eye Centre. 350 Sauchichall Street. 332 7521. 9pm. £3. The Desperadoes simply write the best indie jangle pop in Scotland. Gorgeous melodies coaxed out and embellished by the harmonising vocals of Fran and Andy (that well-known Scottish cabaret duo). The Rhythm Kittens have very swiftly broken their no-more-gigs-for-a-very- Iong-time promise. or maybe they‘ve just deferred it. so catch them now before their version of the Manchester bass line is lost to the next fickle teen sensation. A pleasing climax to the second lrn Bru Rox Week.

I Xentrix Videodromc. 33—39 York Street. 221 0441. 8pm. £4. The biggest up-and-coming name in the thrash stakes. and a bit of a scoop for the Videodromc apparently. Like many bands oftheir ilk, they remain an unknown quantity to the average punter. but nevertheless attract a devout army of worshippers wherever they lay their amps.

I Something Wild Studio. 12 Shuttle Street. Paisley. 889 6867. 10pm. £1.50.

Edinburgh

I Daryl Hall and John Oates Playhouse. Greenside Place. 557 2590. 7.30pm. £13.50. £1 1 .50. See Sun 28.

I Adamslti Network. West Tollcross. 228 3252. After spending two months recording I)r Adams/(1's M astral Pharmacy in the States and playing support slots for Happy Mondays and Inspiral Carpets. Adamski has worked more of a ‘rock vibe‘ into his work. lfhis rendition of ‘All Shook Up' is any indication. I'd rather be somewhere else. As well as his new group. The Fourth Dimension. the keyboard-tickler will be bringing London DJs. local DJs and a surreal stage set.

I The Rootsie Tootsie Blues Band Preservation Hall. Victoria Street. 226

3816. 9.30pm. Free. Residency. Rockin‘ blues band incorporating The Rootsies Duo.

WEDNESDAY 31 Glasgow

I The Tremens and The Hemingways Reflections. Cumbernauld. 8pm. Free. There’s a lot to be said for lack of progression when it comes toThe Tremens. Their earthy. tribal silliness and lunatic lyrics remain assuredly the same. year in. year out. The Hemingways. formerly Dexter Slim and the Pickups. are a rock/blues outfit in the same vein astheir previous incarnation. Plus the demo disco. organised in conjunction with Noise Box. I The Real McCoy Shelter. 7 Renfrew Court. 332 6231 . 9.30pm. Free. Wishaw‘s answer to lNXS with some vibrant pop tunes to their name.

Edinburgh

I Tangerine Dream Playhouse Theatre. Greenside Place. 557 2590. 7.30pm. £9.50. £8.50. There are so many people theorising that T. Dream and others of their kidney will come back that they must have thought the time was right to dipa toe in the water again. 23 years aftertheir formation. Pioneers in the use of synthesisers. so can we expect an evening ofambient. drifting sounds? 1fthe alternative is Jean-Michel Jarre. I‘ll throw in my lot with Tangerine Dream. thank you very much.

I The Charlatans and Easy Network. West Tollcross. 228 3252. See Preview.

I Gargleblud and The Varikose Veins Venue. Calton Road. 557 3073. (iorehounds assemble! (iargleblud's schlock-horror theatrical rock should be at peak power at this Hallowe‘en show. Plus. The Varikose Veins showed on their Chrome Records LP that they‘re not lowly pillagers ofhanded-down riffs. Treacle scone japes and dooking for apples downstairs.

I Blue Haze Merlin. Morningside Road. 447 4329. Free. A duo with singer and former member ofThe Dextcrs. Liz MacEwan. and a keyboard player performing a set of60s and 70s MOR. some blues and a few modern songs.
