I Thomas The lmposter ( 15 ) (Georges Franju, France, 1965) Emmanuele Riva. Fabrice Rouleau. Jean Servais. 93 mins. Edinburgh: French Institute.

I Total Recall (18) (Paul Verhoeven, US, 1990) Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sharon Stone, Michael lronside. 109 mins. In Verhoevcn‘s hugely expensive rollercoaster of violence Arnie plays an ordinary construction worker whose trip to vacational fantasy implant service Rekall Incorporated is to pitch him into an unpredictable netherworld ofmurderous assassins and femmes fatales before unleashing the full truth about his nightmares of life on Mars. The crazy Dutchman‘s Martian chronicle, teeming with sicko incident. is powered along by bursts ofgee-ain't-this-fun-brutality but scores points for the playful ingenuity of the plotting, and Arnie looks like he's enjoying himself. Glasgow: Odeon. Edinburgh: UCI. Strathclyde: UCI Clydebank.

I Touch of Evil (18) (Orson Welles. US. 1958) Orson Welles. Charlton Heston, Marlene Dietrich, Janet Leigh. 108 mins. In a sleazy border town, the murder ofa Mexican bigwig causes friction between corrupt local detective Hank Quinlan (Welles himself) and upright Mexican narcotics agent Vargas (Heston). Amidst a gallery of Wellesian grotesques and expressionist camerawork the dialogue between truth andjustice becomes progressively more garbled. I The Vanishing (15) (George Sluzier. Netherlands. 1988) Bernard Pierre Donnadieu, Gene Bervoets, Johanna Ter Steege. 106 mins. A young Dutch woman on holiday with her boyfriend in France disappears inexplicably. and her partner spends years of his life tracking herdown. eventually to meet up with her mysterious abductor under the most nerve-shattering of circumstances. I Wings Of The Apache (15) (David Green. US. 1990) Nicholas Cage, Sean Young. Tommy Lee Jones. 89 mins. In their battle against Colombian drug lords, the US authorities decide to send in a massive taskforce of Ali-64 Apache attack helicopters, but not before unorthodox pilot Cage, love interest Young and barking instructor Jones have finished basic training together. Replete with dreadful Phil Collins songs, unconvincing explosions and confusing action sequences, this real stinker takes the concept of miscasting into a previously uncharted wasteland. For a miserable Nicholas Cage. it‘s pretty much abject humiliation. Edinburgh: Odeon.

. existence of witches, which isn‘t much

help actually because within the next half hour he stumbles on their annual convention in a small English hotel and gets himself changed into a mouse for his pains. A pleasing adaption of Roald Dahl‘s children‘s story has director Roeg (in unusually straightforward manner) creating a superior kids movie that has you rooting for the mice all the way. Lots of fun.
