Since the storming success at last season’s Grand Slam victory, Scottish rugby has never had it so good. ‘An encouraging tour’ (Scottish coach lan McGeechan), to New Zealand saw the Scots side win all six provincial matches and only narrowly tail to overcome the mighty All-Blacks at Eden Park. A year before the World Cup comes to the Northern Hemisphere, interest in the sport in Scotland has
never been higher. Now, it remains to
be seen whether the current success can be consolidated in time torthe second Rugby World Cup which iticlts oil at Twicltenham on 3 October 1991. In the meantime the McEwan’s National League season gets under way on 22 September. Since the National Leagues were introduced in 1973-74 Hawlclt have led the Borders’ domination with a staggering ten lirst division titles. Indeed the only team to have prized the cup away from the steely grip of the south has been the great Heriots side oi 1978. Last year the Herioters and Edinburgh Academicals both ran Melrose close. Though the Green Yards’ side eventually took their first title with a point to spare and a game in hand. This season the Edinburgh sides seem to have the best chance ol catching a previously rampant Melrose team and it would at least help ease the monotony it either they or Glasgow High/Kelvinside can mount a convincing challenge to the stranglehold ol the south.
